Nicole Richie wowed everyone with her ‘70s-inspired sequined gown by Reem Acra at the 18th annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Party, once again proving her vintage style cred.

Want to be like Nicole and carry off vintage pieces with aplomb? Here are some tips to get you started on the timeless yet trendy look.

Start simple: Begin with colours you’d usually wear, instead of shocking everyone with neon pink, lime green, or worse, a rainbow of bright colours.
Don’t mix eras: Pick a decade or era and play it up with a statement accessory or piece of apparel.
Old and new: Never wear vintage from top to toe, ala Ugly Betty. For example, if you’re wearing a vintage blouse, match it with modern pants or skirt.
Accessorise: Combine a modern outfit with a couple of vintage accessories, such as retro sunnies and a wicker purse, for a refreshing look.
Cinch your waist: Go for high-waist skirts, shorts or pants, which also help to accentuate your curves!
Pattern play: Incorporate any of these retro elements if you’re still in doubt of what’s vintage – tiny floral prints, polka dots, ethnic embroidery, bows and ribbons.
