As creative director of accessories and menswear at Fendi, Silvia Venturini Fendi has seen the historic Italian brand through years of iconic It-bag creations. Amongst her many brainchildren (which include the cult-status Baguette bag), the Fendi Peekaboo celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.
Instantly recognisable even to the untrained eye, the Peekaboo bag continues to be the Fendi’s best-selling style, and has been sported on A-listers such as Queen Rania of Jordan, Angelina Jolie and Amal Clooney.
The Peekaboo got its name from its structure; leaving the bag unclasped offers peek at into its interior lining. Most of the styles offer offsetting color or patterns for added contrast.
The trapezoid shape gives the bag a sophisticated appeal. There’s a single top handle, and an optional shoulder strap.
While the look of the bag itself seems simple, the devil’s truly in the details: beautiful luxe materials (depending on the style, it can range from calfskin leather to exotic crocodile skin and even fur and Selleria), intricate stitching and sometimes added embellishments. The hardware on the front of the Peekaboo varies from bronze to gold depending on the colourway.
To put it simply, the Peekaboo’s timeless appeal lies in the simplicity of its form, and the complexity in its details. “I really think it’s one of those objects you want to belong to your family,” Silvia Fendi says, “You buy a Peekaboo not only thinking that you will wear it now, but also that you are going to wear it in the future and one of your daughters will probably steal it from your closet. It’s one of those objects that will stay with you for all the time.”
To celebrate the 10th year anniversary of the Fendi Peekaboo, Fendi’s own daughters, Delfina Delettrez and Leonetta Luciana Fendi come forward to star in a video alongside their mother and share why they love the bag so much.
