How to achieve the E-girl look according to local singer-songwriter Haven

Rest assured, this doesn’t involve crazy hair colours or a two-hour makeup routine

Local music label AOR Global’s freshest gem Haven is checking all the boxes of a star: She croons in both English and Chinese, rocks a cool street style, and she’s just 16 years old. But that comes as little surprise as she was one of three artistes handpicked by the company for its Reach Programme, which guides new talents in becoming a superstar performer. Apart from swaying to Haven’s melancholic vocals in her sophomore single Blue, we found ourselves taking a page from Haven’s eclectic e-girl aesthetic.

You might have realised that the soft romantic days of VSCO filters are in its final hours on Instagram, and we have been making a steady transition into the era of e-girls (and boys). The “e” here stands for the Internet, and the term simply applies to youth who have developed an aesthetic from spending a considerable amount of time online.

We’re talking wild hair, heavy broody makeup (often looking like someone nursing a cold), and animated (comfy yet OTT) fashion. As a style that evolved from the confines of a bedroom, there has perhaps never been a time like now (#circuitbreaker) when the e-girl has felt this relatable.

Here, Haven shares 10 key must-haves to achieve her e-girl look.

Take a hoodie from lazy to luxe by playing around with different accessories, such as a bucket hat or chain accessories.

This is my go-to look for parties or events that may be rather humid, like an outdoor concert.

Mesh tops are perfect for layering with bralettes or spaghetti tops for an edgy yet loungey look.

I love MLMA, and her brand, Skoot Apparel. The oversized jersey is the definitely the focus of this look. It’s a trendy, street outfit especially when paired with the bucket hat, chunky sneakers, and shark socks.

Spending all that time online only means you need a trusty pair of shades to shield you from that blue light.

I like to DIY my clothes and shoes to express my creativity through fashion. This is a denim jacket that I customised with fabric and spray paint.

You can never go wrong with an all-black ensemble. Pimp it up with silver accessories like this reflective fanny pack.

Part of being an e-girl is representing alternative personalities.
A simple tip: add a belt buckle and lace-up boots for an edgy combat-esque look!

The easiest way to go OTT is by opting for exaggerated sleeves.

The layered turtleneck

The staple turtleneck-oversized tshirt combination is a defining trait of the e-girl style. I usually like to layer unique pieces of jewellery (even up to four kinds) when I coordinate such looks!
