The humble and classic A-line silhouette is the one universally flattering fit. Why? While most women’s waists are the narrowest point on their body, those who have a less defined ratio between their hip and waist can turn to an A-line to provide the illusion of a nipped-in waist. The fit and flare technique is a cut that has been used throughout fashion history in various ways, from the peplum to the fishtail hem, to draw attention where attention is due, and to create a dramatic entrance and exit.

Here are some outfits we love that incorporate A-line cuts, both skirts and dresses, for a flattering and versatile piece to wear:

If you’re expecting, the A-line silhouette works beautifully. If you’re a fan of your legs, go for a shorter style like Blake Lively! It takes the attention away from your bump, especially when paired with a high neckline like this stunning Elie Saab number.

Be picky about the fabric you choose for anything you buy, but especially if you’re looking to purchase a killer dress. Silk and satin are seriously stunning, but are not an everyday material due to their tendency to crease. Crepe, chiffon, tulle and cotton are better and more durable options for everyday wear and tear.

Go for volume if you’re looking to up the ante on your look for the evening, or even if you’re just looking to make a bold statement at work. Like Dior’s New Look vibes, choose a fabric that holds volume and shape, even if you opt not to have Dior’s boning construction under it!

Try a tiered style if you’re bottom- or tummy-heavy and don’t feel comfy with a more traditional A-line.

An A-line mini skirt paired with ankle boots makes for a great casual weekend or after-hours outfit. The A-line of the mini makes it more chic and subtly sexier than a conventional fitted cut.

A maxi skirt with lots of volume is perfect for making a dramatic entrance. We love Sarah Rutson’s take on the look at the shows. Net-a-Porter’s Global Head of Buying sure knows how to work a professional look and give it an added edge!

Play with length and try out a midi length with gladiator-style sandals or playful shoes. When you have more leg on display, you can show off intricate lace-up styles or brightly coloured footwear to their best advantage.
