To celebrate 125 years of the legendary artist René Magritte, Belgium luxury leather goods maison Delvaux has launched a special capsule collection, in collaboration with the Magritte Foundation.
This is not the first time the two Belgian icons have come together, but it is the first collection that honours Magritte's twin loves: his art, as well as his wife Georgette Berger, who was both a model and muse for the surrealist artist.
Capturing the essence of Magritte's genius, this collaboration blurs the lines between reality and fantasy, giving a cheeky update to Delvaux's signature silhouettes like the Brillant and Tempête bags.
Besides the capsule collection, fans of fashion and surrealist art alike will be thrilled to know that Delvaux will showcase seven of Magritte's iconic artworks, which have never been revealed to the public. The exclusive exhibition starts in Hong Kong and will travel to Seoul to coincide with the collection's launch in Asia.
The collection is ingeniously divided into four mesmerizing motifs, each inspired by a signature Magritte artwork. Curious to find out more about these wearable pieces of art?
Here's what you need to know:
L'Humour (which means hunour) was inspired by the iconic painting 'Trahison des images' (1928-1929). This hyperreal depiction of a pipe, with the famous quote "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" (This is not a pipe), adds a playful touch to the collection. Delvaux introduces a fresh interpretation of the Brillant silhouette, adorned with scripted embroidery of "Ceci n’est pas un Delvaux" (This is not a Delvaux) on box calf leather.
Drawing inspiration from the painting 'L’Art de la Conversation' (1950), you'll find two graceful swans intertwined together on one side and with the word "Amour" (0r love) on the other. This poetic depiction reflects Magritte's passion with Georgette, whom he met as a teenager. Despite being separated by war, they remained inseparable until Magritte's passing in 1967. The L'Amour motif can be found embroidered on the Brillant and Pin ranges, and is available in calf leather in refreshing shades of aloe, ivory, azure, and bloom.
Ed's note: The Pin version in ivory is an exclusive to Hong Kong and only available at the Delvaux store at K11 Musea boutique.
The apple is one of Magritte's most famous symbols, so it's no surprise that it would be chosen as a key inspiration for the collection. Inspired by paintings like 'Le Prêtre marié' (1968) and 'Le Fils de L’Homme' (1964), this motif captures the magic of apples used to conceal and reveal. Delvaux molds the fruit into a delightful 3D pouch in jumping calf aloe, complete with a crossbody strap so you can carry a touch of surrealism with you wherever you go.
The iconic figure synonymous with Magritte is shrouded in intrigue, enhanced by subtle clouds—a recurring motif in Magritte's art. The newly launched Delvaux Pin City and other small leather goods all take on the L'Homme motif which exude an enigmatic allure.
