Happy 50th Earth Day! Not to be confused with World Environment Day that takes place on June 5, Earth Day was created by US Senator Gaylord Nelson to convince the federal government that the planet was at risk from pollution, and to educate the public about the issue.
Today, co-conscious brands often use Earth day as an opportunity to inform consumers about new green technologies, or to remind people of nature's beauty. So here're six of them with goods we'd like to cart out.
This Spring, Polo Ralph Lauren is expanding its Earth Polo shirt offering to reinforce the brand’s commitment to protecting the environment. It now comes in 19 colorways for men including long sleeve silhouettes, 7 colors for women, and 9 colors for kids, along with printed design options, all using an innovative dye process that involves zero water.
Each Earth Polo, crafted from thread derived entirely from recycled plastic bottles, is made from an average of 12 plastic bottles. The label aims to use 170 million plastic bottles in its product and packaging by 2025.
If you come across a pistachio label when shopping Burberry, it means you’re looking at the ‘ReBurberry Edit’ - a curated edit of 26 styles from the SS'20 collection crafted from the latest sustainable materials used across the Burberry product range. The label informs the customer how a product meets a range of criteria which the brand refers to as ‘positive attributes’. It includes things like the amount of organic content or recycled natural fibres used in materials and the standards at production facilities.
To inform, inspire and motivate consumers to break bad wardrobe choices (and also to celebrate Earth Day), Vestiaire Collective launched the ‘Wardrobe Reality Check’ - a challenge for fashion lovers to evaluate the impact of their own wardrobes. The platform collaborated with 5 inspirational women from around the world to kickstart the challenge: Environmental activists Lily Cole and Arizona Muse, co-founder of Future Earth, Steph Shep, model and TV host Cara G Mcllroy, and Netflix cast and fashion creative Mae Tan. Mae’s wardrobe picks are now on sale on Vestiaire Collective.
We had to add this into our Earth Day selection simply because we can never be reminded enough of Mother Nature’s beauty. Danish watchmaker Bering is celebrating the beauty of the Arctic’s Northern Lights with its latest collection True Aurora. The timepieces are available in six vibrant colours, and come in 34mm and 40mm aluminium cases complete with scratch-resistant sapphire-crystal glass.
P.S. For every purchase of the Bering Green Charity watch (not in photograph), the label donates US$15 to Polar Bears International, an organisation dedicated to the conservation of wild polar bears.
Ever since the process of leather tanning was developed over 10,000 years ago, the idea of tanning hides without using large amounts of water was unthinkable. But ECCO Leather has reinvented one of the world’s oldest industries by developing and refining a way of using the moisture already present in the hides. The result is DriTan technology, which has reduced the annual discharge of waste water at a single Ecco Leather tannery by 600 tons. To showcase this innovative technology, Ecco has launched a version of the iconic Soft 8 sneaker in four colours using DriTan produced leather.
Inspired by the carefree culture of 1980s Miami, the Timberland Rest and Roam collection features airy silhouettes and light fabrics in summery pastel hues. It is in line with Timberland’s sustainability initiatives to minimize the environmental impact. This includes utilising innovative and sustainable fabric technologies such as Rebotl lining, which is made from at least 50 percent recycled polyester.
