Dressing for the weekends can be a creative struggle for some. After all, we can’t fall back on the formulaic office wear that we go through for the majority of the week (and we wouldn’t want to either!). Most of the time, we fall back on the easiest and most convenient looks that are synonymous with the typical Singaporean — a spag top, denim shorts, flip-flops — because it’s so much easier than having to think.

So to help you ease some of that pain, we’ve rounded up some Asian celebs who have pulled off stunning off-duty looks to help you cop a few style tips. It is time to say goodbye to boring weekend outfits.

1. Adopt a pretty white shirt

1/11

White shirts aren’t only great for the office. Instead of pencil skirts and tailored trousers, switch it up with a pair of distressed denim or linen pants for the weekends and holidays. Like Park Min Young here, find one that isn’t just a plain design. Pick out those with added details such as ruffles, frills, lace and other unique details that add extra oomph.

2. Work your jacket

2/11

Just because it’s an off-duty look doesn’t mean you should be shabbily dressed. Take a cue from Chinese actress Yang Mi who elevated a simple all black ensemble by wrapping a tweed jacket around her waist. The jacket acts as an embellishment to her outfit, jazzing up what is a very normal, casual look. Plus, you get extra cred points if it’s Chanel.

3. Don’t forget your hat

3/11

When it comes to accessorising, many would turn to jewellery, shoes and bags to complete their outfit. Hats, as Victoria Song showed here, can also lend a powerful impact to your ensemble too. Pick a bold pink shearling bucket hat to complete a street style look like her or try on straw sun hats with a summer dress, for example. Plus, headwear is great to conceal a bad hair day (or when you’re too lazy to do anything more than a ponytail).

4. Go oversized

4/11

Taiwanese host Dee Hsu is never shy with her stylish looks. We love how she layered an oversized shirt (you can take one from your man’s wardrobe) over a simple striped top and tights, before finishing with functional but stylish white sneakers. Who says airport fashion has to be boring?

5. High socks are cool again

5/11

If Korean actress Park Shin Hye’s look is not a clue, we’ll tell you: High cut tube socks are back in trend. And you can easily style it like her, with a pair of shorts and sneakers to show off your toned gams. PS: We say you can even lose the white and have even more fun with the look by opting for socks with funky designs, prints and colours — so that nobody can say you’re boring.

6. Say yes to flip flops

6/11

If you thought that flip flops are a fashion faux pas, think again. Flip flops are slowly but surely gaining traction in the style department, after being spotted on Kendall Jenner and other style influencers (who would have thought just a few timed photos from influencers were all it took to elevate our humble slipper?). Just remember that the accompanying ensemble cannot look sloppy or you’ll just end up looking shabby. Take a leaf from the book of Korean actress Kim Go Eun by throwing on a tailored jacket that’ll make ripped jeans look polished.

7. Biker shorts are the new hot pants

7/11

Bike shorts have been spotted on the Spring/Summer’19 runways of Prada, Chanel and Fendi, which means they are the It shorts of the moment. Chinese actress Dilraba Dilmurat is right at the forefront of fashion trends (not surprisingly) with her biker shorts. It’s sporty and gives off a I’m-so-cool-I-can-wear-anything-I-like vibe. Besides, it’s definitely a polished alternative to the denim hot shorts we used to buy from Bugis Street.

8. Put on your mom jeans

8/11

The high-waisted, relaxed-fit jean that we call mom jeans are especially favoured by the cool girls, thanks to their practical suburbia style and incredible comfort. Follow Korean singer Choi Sooyoung by pairing the pant simply with a tee. Extra points if you match the shade of your top to your shoes, just like what Sooyoung did with her sporty blue kicks.

9. Rock metallics

9/11

Just because you’ve got no social events to attend doesn’t mean you can’t dress up. When everyone else is wearing soft and comfy slacks and sweatshirts, be that babe wearing that standout metallic hue that will brighten up the room. Indian actress Deepika Padukone shows you how to do it — simply wear a casual tee with a pair of metallic silver pants and finish it with matching silver pointed heels and long earrings. Now here’s a way to get the service you’ve always needed at the supermarket.

10. An It bag never fails

10/11

We don’t need to tell you that a bag is more than just a practical, functional item. We also don’t need to tell you that a bag can make or break and outfit. In fact, a right bag can be the best investment you can ever make, #justsaying. Just look at local actress Rebecca Lim — she might be dressed simply in a maroon sweater and a printed skirt, but her teal Dior 30 Montaigne bag stole the show. This bag is especially great because you can style it three ways  — as a clutch, shoulder or crossbody bag.

11. Get a printed shirt

11/11

When all else fails and you’re at your wits’ end, go with what Thai singer/member of South Korean group Blackpink Lisa did, by wearing a printed t-shirt and a pair of denim shorts. Okay it’s nothing fancy, but we say she’s a great example of how you can look good rocking any outfit as long as you exude a “I don’t care how I look but I know I’m stylish” confidence.
