As we gallop into the Year of the Fire Horse, it’s time to embrace the vibrant energy, strength and innovation that this new year brings. While feng shui is commonly used to balance your home or workplace to establish harmony between yourself and your environment, these principles can also apply to your beauty routine.

Chi, the vital life energy that flows through all living things and spaces, plays a key role in this balance. According to Grand Master David Goh of Imperial Harvest, “When your personal chi is aligned, your beauty products become more than skincare and makeup – they become instruments that amplify your confidence, radiance and magnetism.”

The key is to use the five elements – Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water – to clear, balance and activate your beauty routine. Additionally, you should tap into the lucky colours and energies of this auspicious Fire Horse year.

Master David, a third-generation feng shui master, recommends a beauty routine that attracts harmony, radiance and luck. Feng shui for beauty is ultimately about intention, energy and alignment.

“When your beauty ritual reflects the Five Elements in harmony, you don’t just enhance your outer appearance – you transform the energy you project to the world. True beauty comes from balanced chi.”

The first step to feng shui your beauty routine is to clear your chi. This is the beauty version of space detox, says Master David. Before introducing any products or elements, feng shui begins with clearing stagnant chi, through decluttering.

Master David explains that clutter traps stagnant chi: “When your beauty shelf is overflowing with half-used products, expired makeup or samples you never touch, it slows down your personal energy field. Decluttering is the first – and most important – act of beauty feng shui.”

To clear beauty chi effectively, remove products past their expiry date and keep only the items you actively use. Also, clean trays, shelves and vanity surfaces. Don’t forget to wipe mirrors – Master David reveals they are powerful chi conductors. And, finally, arrange items so that every product has breathing space.

“This process refreshes your personal aura and sets the stage for the Five Element activation,” says Master David.

Auspicious colours for the Year of the Fire Horse include red, crimson or cherry to activate fire luck, peach, coral or blush to enhance attraction, gold, champagne and soft metal tones to stabilise fire with metal, and verdant greens to balance fire with wood.

Master David explains that balancing or cooling colours are sometimes needed as fire can be  overwhelming, especially for some BaZi charts. He suggests soft blues and water tones to support emotional balance and black accents to strengthen water chi and reduce excess heat.

“These colours can be incorporated into lipstick shades, eye palettes, manicure colours, fragrance bottles or even your makeup pouch,” says Master David.

How to choose beauty products that represent each of the five elements

Feng shui is ultimately about balance. A harmonious beauty routine includes all five elements – either through the ingredient type, packaging colour, texture or intention behind the product.

“The Five Elements are not symbolic decorations. They are dynamic energies that influence our clarity, vitality, radiance and grounding,” says Master David.

Wood element – represents growth, renewal, vitality

Master David says: This element activates renewal of skin, emotional growth, creativity and self-expression, as well as vibrant, youthful energy.

How it shows up in beauty: Botanical or plant-based serums, facial mists that refresh and awaken, or products infused with green tea, ginseng, algae or bamboo. Also, products in green or teal packaging.
