The bob is a timeless hairstyle that has spun off several variations over the decades. What’s currently in trend is the Italian bob, which is a more casual, bouncier bob. The trend has taken over TikTok and Instagram, and has been seen on the likes of Zendaya and Hailey Bieber.

What is an Italian bob? According to Jerry Lin, chief director of Chez Vous: Private Space, the Italian bob is typically chin length and characterised by subtle layers and texture at the top, while the tips are slightly frayed and blunt, deviating from the regular bob's one-length, gradually concave precision.

One of the best things about an Italian bob is that it complements almost all face shapes – except round faces, says Jerry. And, if you have a long face shape, he suggests aiming for a bob at the lip level to balance proportions and create a less elongated look.

“It exudes an effortlessly chic aesthetic with more movement and tousled charm compared to its neater counterpart,” he says, and adds that it's usually best styled in a deep side parting for maximum volume and body.

Could the Italian bob suit a fringe too? It depends. Hairstylist Eri Su advises to steer clear of drastic looks, and suggests an elevated fringe instead. Jerry, on the other hand, advises against bangs or short fringes. “They tend to box in the face, emphasising any flaws such as sunspots or wrinkles,” he explains.

One should also note that the Italian bob is not meant to be neat, so you should be ready to embrace some light frizz and unruliness for an effortless and authentic look.

“Post-shampoo and conditioner, mist your hair with KMS Sea Salt Spray before blow-drying in a deep side parting,” says Jerry. “If you have a Dyson Airwrap with the Round Volumising Brush, it will make maintaining your bob easier. Lastly, finish with Oribe Dry Texturising Spray, and scrunch it a bit for the best results.” He adds that those with poker straight hair might want to consider a cold perm with the largest rod size, for “enhanced movement”.

For easy maintenance at home, Eri is a fan of volumising to create body, with a soft spray to elevate texture, while Jerry recommends KMS Add Power Shampoo for additional texture. If you are looking for a conditioner that does not weigh your hair down, Kerasilk’s Volumising Foam Conditioner is also a good option.
