Two of beauty’s biggest makeup brands have come out swinging this year with big makeup primer launches.

Urban Decay has completely revamped and expanded their existing face primer range, dedicating new formulas to address four unique skin issues. While the brand has always been dedicated to makeup, they’re toeing the skincare line this year with this brand new line of complexion primers.

Nars on the other hand has always had a skincare arm and skin-specific primers like the pore refining primer and light optimising primer. This year, they’ve released three new primers in sleeker and brighter packaging, meant to boost, mattify, or smooth your skin.

I’m loving the new packaging from both brands, though Urban Decay wins a little with the solid clear tubes and hygienic airless pumps (which means you get all the product out of the tube)!

Urban Decay De-Slick Complexion Primer, $55

1/7

If you’ve got oily skin and the De-Slick makeup setting spray is your best friend, then you need to get on this. Inspired by the brand’s cult favourite De-Slick in a Tube (discontinued), this primer is also a power packed shine-killer. It’s pretty lightweight but seriously mattifies your face wherever you apply it. I’d recommend only using this where you really get oily using a dabbing or pressing motion instead of rubbing it into your skin, and letting the setting spray take care of the rest of your face.

This primer also has smoothing properties, evens out your skin tone, and makes your pores less visible! It’s got a sheer nude colour to it that blends into your skin perfectly. It’s also perfect for guys with oily skin (or shiny bald heads) who want to get rid of the shine while leaving your skin looking perfectly natural.

Urban Decay Optical Illusion Complexion Primer, $55

2/7

This primer is meant for all skin types to blur all your flaws, fine lines, and pores. It also keeps your makeup on longer, and has optical blurring pigments, a blend of rosehip argan and meadowfoam seed oils that are both moisturising and antioxidants, as well as Vitamin E for your skin.

The primer comes out a little thicker like most blurring primers, but a little bit goes a long way and it does an amazing job at making your pores disappear and smoothing out your complexion. The formula also has a slight pink tint to it which brightens the skin and gives it a radiance boost, though it dries down translucent and undetectable.

Urban Decay Bright & Tight Complexion Primer, $55

3/7

Now this is the most interesting primer of the lot, largely because few makeup brands have come out with “lifting” primers like this. It’s ideal if you want to give your face a little tightening or lifting, perfect after a late night out or any post-holiday bloating.

The formula is extremely lightweight and has a pearlescent colour to it that helps illuminate your skin. It leaves you with more lifted and glowing skin without any shine, and also contains amazing skin conditioning ingredients like hyaluronic acid filling spheres, niacinamide (Vitamin B3), and lychee extract. You don’t need to have mature skin to use this, and if you have more combination skin, you can also mix and match primers, using this on the outer perimeter of your face and pressing some De-Slick primer along your T-zone.

Urban Decay Self-Adjusting Complexion Primer, $55

4/7

This is the perfect primer for anyone with an uneven skin tone or lots of redness. It’s a dedicated colour-correcting primer that contains encapsulated pigments that burst on the skin upon application and then adapt to your skin.

It also has a soft-focus effect to blur flaws and fills in fine lines as well as controls shine. This primer needs to be blended well until it perfectly corrects your skin tone, because the formula releases more pigments the longer you blend!

Nars Smooth & Protect SPF50/PA++++, $65

5/7

A primer that blurs your pores, fine lines, and wrinkles isn’t new, but one that contains sun protection is rare. Even moreso, it’s tough to find a primer out there with such potent skin protection, as well as antioxidants that go a step further to deflect pollution and other environmental aggressors.

Whether you’re dealing with pigmentation or uneven skin tone, I can’t stress enough how important sun protection is. I recently scanned my skin before a facial, and though I can’t actually see pigmentation, I learned that I do have significant sun damage in my skin despite slapping on a minimum of SPF30 every morning.

Nars Radiance Primer SPF35/PA+++, $65

6/7

Another primer that contains sun protection is the Radiance Primer, which is created to brighten dull or fatigued skin. Though the sun protection isn’t as potent as the smoothing primer, it’s got enough protection if you’re running a couple of errands or heading out for a little while. If you plan to be out all day, definitely layer a higher coverage sunscreen beneath!

This primer has got a pearlescent formula that is going to warm and boost the radiance of your complexion. It also contains a plant extract called Evodia Rutecarpa which is meant to promote skin vitality in the long run, so you get skincare benefits the more you use it!

Nars Pore & Shine Control Primer, $65

7/7

As we know, no primer range is complete without a mattifying primer that also tackles large pores. This one has a pore minimising complex to mattify the skin throughout the day with soft-focus powders that also refine the appearance of any skin texture and imperfections.

How Nars has worked to set this apart from other shine control primers, is with the use of peptides, african whitewood and oleanolic, to help balance out your skin in the long run which will also help your skin’s ability to control the oil it produces.
