Squiggly, feathered, rainbow coloured… what's happening to people's brows?

Squiggle brows started with beauty bloggers like Promise Tamang. They were evidently getting a little too creative with their makeup, you know, as beauty bloggers sometimes do.



The internet subsequently exploded over the trend, which other makeup and beauty bloggers also picked up on, and copied for their social media posts. There were some who were supportive, if not still somewhat doubtful, but for the most part, these beauty bloggers were slammed big time for sporting squiggle brows.



We asked our top makeup gurus for their reactions on this weird trend.

Nonsensical & unwearable

“I think the squiggle brow is yet another silly trend started by someone to get attention on social media,” says Clarence Lee.

You can wear those brows when you want to look ridiculous. Talk about furrowed brows!” adds Lee.

The makeup artist says he is all for beautiful makeup and hence would never encourage such outrageous trends for normal days.

Maybe a “tri-band” brow could look pretty sassy, if you really want to try something inventive. Use different shade brow powders or pencils, applying the darkest shade at the base of brows, a medium shade in the middle, and the lightest shade at the top.

Don’t take it too seriously

"It’s just for fun right?” quips makeup artist Melissa Yeo. “Let's not be too serious about this,” she suggests.

 

Makeup should be fun, of course.

 

She adds that these unusual brows might be ok for runway or editorial looks or maybe a Halloween party, “but please do not go out with those brows on normal occasions because you will definitely get weird stares from everyone."

Too cartoonish

“I think it is great that people don’t take themselves too seriously to want to look like Squidward from the cartoon SpongeBob SqaurePants,” jokes makeup artist Larry Yeo.

“To me, it is a cross between a bawling-your-eyes-out expression and a severe diarrhea moment,” he adds. “Wear these brows if you are headed to see a doctor and want to make sure you get medical leave approved.”

But jokes aside, Larry says that brows are one of the anchors of the face because it brings structure to the facial proportions. If you want to get creative, he suggests experimenting with different hues to match your hair colour, or add some shimmer for fun by lightly dusting on a glittery eye shadow over the brows.

Artistic, yes. Practical, no.

“Looking at this positively, the beauty bloggers who started this trend can be seen as fun and artistic, in a way,” says makeup artist Lolent Lee. “But frankly I don’t know when it can be used in reality. I can't visualise doing it for any clients.”

 

The look is way to avant garde for daily life he says, and we totally agree.

Other whacky brow trends

Braided brows can actually look quite artistic, IMO

 

Most of the pictures of this trend floating around on the web are mostly fabricated using digital imaging, but there are beauty bloggers like roxxbeautyglam doing how-to tutorials, if you’re interested.

Rainbow connection

Hey, eyebrows are arches, so why not paint them in colourful hues and pretend they are rainbows?

Birds of a feather

If you have bushy brows, this feathered brow trend may work on you.

 

It entails parting your brows down the middle so that the centre looks like the spine of a feather. Lots of brow gel is needed here.

 

But whatever the makeup trend and however crazy it looks, remember it really is all in good fun. After all, it is makeup and none of it is permanent. Well, until some loony gets them tattooed on, that is… But until then, let’s just have a laugh.
