As someone who has hereditary dark under eye circles, I’ve been on the hunt for good concealers from a fairly young age. Starting out at 15, budget was always my biggest concern. Today, there are way too many options out there to try them all, with international options now available through online shipping, so I’ve narrowed down some options for you.
I use four out of five of these on an everyday basis (the fifth one doesn’t come in my shade), and while each has its pros and cons, they are very impressive for the price.
While the Maybelline Fit Me range – which is extremely popular in the US and the UK – isn’t available in Singapore, you can get the foundations and concealers from sites like Carousell with reliable sellers. This concealer has been widely touted as a “dupe” or a budget alternative to the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, and has very similar packaging -- squarish tube, doe foot applicator -- with a formula that is also full coverage, lightweight and creamy.
I find that it blends best with a beautyblender or a brush, and has a decent range of seven shades for fair to tan skin tones. I use the shade 25 Medium, that suits my NC30 skin, and there are two darker shades than that.
The concealer is available for around $10 to $15 on Carousell (certain pre-orders are more expensive if you can’t find your shade from sellers who have stock).
What I love about this concealer is the applicator and the coverage. The bulbous sponge applicator fits perfectly under your eye and makes it easy to apply a thin and even layer of concealer. The formula itself is more liquid than cream, but blends out easily. The shade range is limited, but includes a neutraliser shade that I find does a great job at cancelling dark circles on light to medium skin tones.
If you’re worried about the hygiene of the sponge, it’s protected by an anti-microbial system which (in theory) makes it perfectly safe. It’s available at Watsons stores, but if they’re out of stock you can always try Carousell.
I decided to try this one after seeing numerous rave reviews about it on YouTube. Add to that, the fact that it was incredibly cheap and had an extensive shade range, and I was sold. Like the Fit Me concealer, I had to get this one off Carousell (sensing a theme here?). I’ve seen it in certain stores like Sasa, but they have a much more limited shade range.
I love that it comes in a small squeeze tube, though it’s easy to squeeze out too much onto the attached brush. The coverage is pretty good and the range even includes various undertones and colour correctors. They are also great for contouring due to the extensive colour range (over 20 shades) and very blendable formula.
I’ve been into trying Sephora Collection products lately, so I purchased this concealer on a whim. I love that Sephora has a decent shade range and a reasonable price point, making it a lot more budget-friendly for everyone.
The concealer itself is a little bit like the Maybelline Fit Me as a whole, but a little more high-end in terms of packaging (sleeker glass tube and flat sponge applicator). The formula on the other hand is just a little heavier. It does have good staying power and blends out fairly well, as well as quite impressive coverage. It creases a little but that’s easily fixed with setting powder. There are six shades to choose from, though there is a definite lack of darker shades.
A more recent player in the world of concealer, is this addition from Bourjois. It’s got a great matte finish for those that prefer it and a lightweight formula that boasts 24 hour hydration, but I did find it looked a little dry and would suggest using an eye cream beforehand. I love the glass bottle and doe foot applicator, though you need to be careful when opening it so that the concealer doesn’t fly onto your clothes.
There are only three shades in this range, which is a big drawback for me, but I did like the brightening effect the concealer had, as well as how comfortably it wore despite having a matte finish.
