#1 Algenist Genius Ultimate Anti-ageing Melting Cleanser
$51, Available at all Sephora stores.

Best for: Normal to dry skin types

Algenist Genius Ultimate Anti-ageing Melting Cleanser contains Alguronic acid – a strain of microalgae – and a blend of olive, bilberry seed and avocado oils, which work together to nourish and revitalise the skin.

I used a 20 cent coin sized amount of the pale-green gel, which immediately transformed into a silky oil as I massaged it into my skin. It did not trickle down my elbows and was quick to remove the waterproof mascara, eyeliner and sheer foundation I was wearing.

The oil turns into a milky white emulsion when it comes into contact with water. After rinsing it off my face, my skin felt soft and supple.

Opt for this if you have dry skin, or are looking to start on an anti-ageing routine as it softens, tones and firms the skin with frequent use. If your combination skin leans more oily then this may be a little too hydrating for you.

#2 Chanel Le Blanc Brightening Tri-Phase Makeup Remover
$77, Available at all Chanel Fragrance & Beauty stores and counters.

Like the rest of Chanel’s Le Blanc line, the new Brightening Tri-Phase Makeup Remover contains a 2-year pearl extract to illuminate dull and yellow-toned complexions.

While you’ll expect such a cleanser to transform into a smooth, silky oil upon contact with the skin, I felt that the consistency remained as a thick gel for a considerable amount of time. Instead, the gel gradually “thins down” as you massage it into the skin for a minute or so.

But even with the thicker consistency, it was easy to spread over the face, removing the same waterproof mascara, eyeliner and sheer foundation I wore in the above review.

It does not emulsify as visibly as most cleansing oils do when they’re mixed with water, but it was easy to rinse off.

I did not notice a significant brightening effect with the cleanser, but it was thorough in removing my makeup.

Get this if you have normal to oily skin.
