The best bang for your buck

1/11

Whether you’re a big collector of wild and colourful makeup or view it as a trusty daily necessity, there’s no denying the appeal of great quality products at an affordable price.

That said, it can get overwhelming navigating all the products on the shelves, not to mention pricey to test them all if you can’t take home samples – but we’ve figured it all out for you.

As part of our tie-up for Guardian’s Health & Beauty Awards 2017, we got seven beauty editors and writers from our sister mags to test and rate their favourite beauty products across various categories.

Looking for your perfect – take a deep breath, now – budget foundations, concealers, blushes, mascaras, eyeliners and lippies? Keep on reading and don’t forget to check out the other skincare, bodycare and haircare winners at this link.

Best compact foundation

2/11

Revlon Colorstay 2-In-1 Compact Makeup & Concealer, $30.90

This relatively new two-in-one compact from Revlon is a sweat-resistant creamy foundation that blends to a perfect finish, while the complementary concealer works hard to hide any residual blemishe. Don’t be deterred by the slightly different shade of the concealer; it’s meant to subtly brighten and conceal to give your face some much-desired dimension while still looking as natural as possible.

Best concealer

3/11

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind, $19.90

We at herworldPLUS have been huge fans of this concealer for a long time now, and it still remains the strongest contender in the drugstore arena. Uniquely anti-ageing, this concealer helps de-puff while concealing dark circles and fine lines thanks to a formula that has skin-friendly goji berry and haloxyl.

Best liquid foundation

4/11

L’Oreal True Match Liquid Foundation, $30.90

The natural finish on this True Match foundation gives you a your-skin-but-better canvas to work with. It’s even got hydrating and antioxidant ingredients to keep your skin protected and moisturised throughout the day. We recommend setting it with powder if you prefer a more mattified finish or if you have particularly oily skin, though the coverage and shade range make this a great beauty staple to have.

Best blusher

5/11

L’Oreal Lucent Magique Cushion Blusher, $21.90

If you’re as big a fan of cushion foundations as we are, then quite frankly you need to add a blusher version to your collection. This one from L’Oreal lets you create a natural flush, thanks to a light-infused formula. All you have to do is lightly tap the product onto the apples of your cheeks to blend out the hue. Start with a very light touch and build up as needed.

Best eyeliner

6/11

Maybelline Hypersharp Powerblack Liner, $22.90

If you love your black liquid liners, this one from Maybelline will give you incredible precision. It has a thin sharp felt tip that lets you create the thinnest line ever, the sharpest possible wing, or whatever graphic design you fancy. The formula is highly pigmented, as black as it gets, and will last through even a strenuous workout (trust us, we’ve tried).

Best mascara

7/11

Maybelline Barbie Mascara, $23.90

If you love the drama and volume of false lashes without actually having to wear falsies, then this will be your new favourite mascara;  it’ll give you perfectly doll-like lashes in three steps (no fussy lash glue necessary!). It’s a double-ended mascara with a black mascara on one end and lengthening fibres on the other. First, put on the black formula as a base. Next, apply the weightless soft fibres to add length. Finish with a coat of the black formula to seal everything in, and you’re all set.

Best eyeshadow palette

8/11

L’Oreal La Palette Eyeshadow, $29.90

There are two palettes to choose from: A more neutral beige nude palette and a rosier version. And with the price point, you can even afford to get both! Each palette boasts 10 wearable shades in a mix of matte and shimmery finishes, so you can create an endless number of looks. The eyeshadows are wonderfully pigmented and long-wearing on the lids, though we do recommend an eyeshadow primer if you’ve got a long day or particularly crazy night ahead.

Best eyebrow liner

9/11

Silky GirL Hi-Definition Brow Liner, $12.90

This slightly waxy brow pencil glides across your skin without tugging out your hairs, giving your brows a soft and natural fullness. And of course, it has a spoolie brush on the other end which is in our books an absolute necessity when it comes to a brow pencil. The pencil has a tapered tip as well that lets you fill in your brows with more precision.

Best matte lipstick

11/11

Palladio Velvet Matte Lipstick, $8.90

We love a good matte lip, but there’s no denying that some matte formulas can be terribly drying on our lips. This liquid lip from Palladio is not one of those, with ingredients like candelilla wax, coconut oil, aloe, vitamin C and vitamin C to nourish your lips. All of that goodness and at an incredibly low price point? What’s not to love?
