Unless you're incredibly blessed, getting your strands to look amazing in the morning takes major time and effort. But, when our snooze button is the victor in the battle between primping our locks and extra sleep, time and effort are just the two things we find ourselves lacking most days. Scalding our roots with a hot metal iron at 6am in the morning? We say this with extra vigour: Ain’t nobody got time for that.
With that said, there are plenty of things you can do while you sleep to help you awaken with a coiffure people will envy. Here are 6 simple hair tricks and treatments to try before you hit the sack for transformed and kempt locks the minute you open those peepers.

Need an intensive cure for your dry locks? A hair mask will do the trick in doubling the dose of hydration on top of your usual conditioner.
Some hair masks can do the job in 10 minutes, but to get the full benefits, try sleeping with a leave in formula once a month.
A mask like Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day Overnight Perfector ($39) is good for restoring your hair’s natural shine, and won't make your pillow sticky.

Towel dry your hair after a shower and give your hair a couple of spritzes of a wave-enhancing spray. Working in one-inch sections, place a small strip of stiff cardboard or paper perpendicular to a section.
Fold the hair over it again and again until it reaches the root before securing it with a bobby pin or hair tie. Repeat this step for the rest of your head. In the morning, untie the strips and shake out your hair for beautiful voluminous waves.

Mist it with just a little bit of hair spray before you get some shut eye.
When you wake up, brush the style out with your fingers gently (not too much), and mist your hair with a volumizing dry shampoo for a tad extra va-va-voluminosity.

For those with greasier hair, smoothing coconut oil on your locks with help create a more positive balance in the oil-producing sebaceous glands.
Once a week, apply coconut oil to your scalp first and work it through from root to tip. Finger-brush it through thoroughly before wrapping your hair in a scarf and double-case your pillows — lest the oil seeps through.
Give your hair a good wash in the morning to make sure the oil is fully rinsed out. Remember that coconut oil tends to solidify when it cools.
If you struggle to rinse the oil out of your hair, try turning up the heat a little when you shampoo your hair and it should wash right out.

For a soft textured look, tie your hair in little sections of braids after a shower.
Braid each section starting a few inches down from the root — if you braid starting up at the root, you wind up with unflattering 80s-like crimps.
You’ll also want to give your braid a few spritzes of leave-in conditioner, saturating it until it's damp throughout (but not soaking wet). This helps your textured curls retain its shape throughout the next day.
Undo the braids the next morning and run a smidgen of hair oil through the lengths to add some separation.
Pro tip: Do not attempt to substitute texturizing spray for leave-in conditioner. The conditioner ensures that your waves will be soft and silky — not crunchy.
