It can often be a minefield trying to figure out how best to look after your skin. One product fits all is not the case with skincare. To start with, the key is to nail down whether you are the oily, dry or combination skin type – then you can treat accordingly.

Oily Skin

Skin prone to shine and impurities? Then you have oily skin. Nailing your cleanser is the first part of managing this skin condition. You don’t need to buy a specific or expensive face wash for oily skin, but stay away from very cheap washes and cleansers as they tend to contain harsher ingredients, which will strip your skin of too much oil, therefore encouraging it to produce more.

Alternatively, try a good quality light cleansing lotion, that won’t clog pores. Simple Kind To Skin Cleansing Lotion will give your complexion just the right amount of TLC. This will balance the skin and manage oil production. Use a gentle toner to remove traces of cleanser after but stay away from astringent and aggressive toners that will strip the natural skin resulting in more oil being produced.

Combination skin

If you have oily skin in the T-zone area (forehead, nose and chin) but dry skin elsewhere then you have combination skin. If this sounds like you, use two different moisturisers – one that balances sebum for the T-zone itself, perhaps something with tea tree oil in it to fight blemishes, and another richer formulation for dehydrated areas, such as the cheeks or neck.

Dry skin

Sensitive, flaky skin? Then you have a dry complexion. Use regular gentle facial scrubs and a cream or lotion cleanser rather than a foaming wash if you suffer from dry skin. Pay particular attention to areas that are prone to dryness like the area around the eyes, cheeks, neck and décolletage. Use a treatment oil to feed your skin and lock in moisture. Look for products that contain jasmine and rose essential oils for a highly nourishing natural moisture-boost.
