Oils have been used since ancient times for hair grooming purposes and have been prized for their ability to smooth and nourish hair.

It may seem a little counterintuitive to apply oil when we’ve dedicated our hair routine to avoiding slick strands but the benefits of adding natural oils to your hair routine are numerous.

Oils can help add moisture and shine to hair, nourish the scalp and aid faster and healthier hair growth.

There are two main types of hair oils – sealing and moisturising.

Sealing oils, as the name suggests, seal in moisture and is usually applied to wet and conditioned hair. An example of a sealing oil would be jojoba oil.

Moisturising oils are typically heavier and richer compared to sealing oils and can be used on dry hair to moisturise the locks.

You can use sealing and moisturising oils at different times – one after a shower, for example, and another as a deep conditioning treatment.

Each of these oils is applied in different ways. You can use an oil to hydrate your scalp, encourage hair growth with a scalp massage, reduce split ends, add in your conditioner and apply a heat treatment (with a heavier oil) – the list goes on.

If your hair has heat damage, breakage or dryness, a hair oil might just be the elixir you need.
