The joint forces of environmentally minded grooming brand The Body Shop and animal protection group Cruelty-Free International have sparked a revolution of sorts: The two organisations have garnered more than one million pledges from around the world asking for a global ban on animal testing for cosmetic purposes.
These pledges were presented to ASEAN regulators during the recently concluded Jakarta Fashion Week – talk about fashion for a cause!
The Body Shop says it will be submitting the pledges to 14 regulatory bodies across the globe in the next few months, in a continued bid to push for a ban.
Here’s why a ban is so crucial. To date, there is no worldwide moratorium on animal testing on cosmetic products. An astonishing 80 percent of the world’s laboratories still permits animal testing in experiments. A global ban will ensure that companies will not be “laboratory-hopping” from one country to the next.
Only time will tell if beauty can finally be cruelty-free.
