The Lunar New Year festivities might be in full swing, but this might also mean waking up to a pounding headache, parched mouth, puffy face and blotchy skin. Congratulations you had a great night out! Or rather, a late night of mahjong, KTV, and who knows what else during your CNY visiting. The down side? This hangover (and possibly a cranky morning with the husband and kids). The good news is you don’t have to look as horrible as you feel. The right skincare and makeup will make you look like you had a night in in front of the telly and even a whole eight hours of sleep!
It’s essential to remove any remaining makeup and impurities from the night before ahead of starting your AM skincare routine. Opt for a lush cleansing balm like the Sunday Riley Blue Moon Tranquillity Cleansing Balm, $82 that will gently but thoroughly cleanse while hydrating, conditioning and soothing the skin thanks to a blend of cocoa butter, mimosa flower wax, German chamomile and blue tansy essential oil.
Hungover skin is dehydrated skin and requires all the moisture it can get. Quench thirsty skin with a lush moisturiser like the Caudalie Vinosource-Hydra S.O.S Intense Moisturizing Cream, $55 that is packed with soothing organic grape water, antioxidant grape seed phenols to fight free radicals, nourishing olive squalane and borage oil so skin is plump and bouncy with no signs of dehydration.
Icing your face can help constrict blood vessels to minimise puffiness and soothe redness. If you don’t fancy an ice cube melting all over your face and hands, get the Skin Gym Ice Coolie Face Barrel Roller, $118 that has a stainless steel barrel roller that helps cool down skin. Plus, rolling it from the centre of your face outward and around your eyes also helps stimulate lymphatic drainage to further reduce puffiness.
The last thing you want when your skin is looking dull and lifeless from drinking, is to opt for a matte look. Add some radiance to your skin with the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter Foundation, $82. It helps reflect light so your skin looks dewy and glowing. Use it under your base or mixed in and on the high points of your face where the light hits naturally and no one will know your skin is looking less than great today.
You might be tempted to pile on the concealer to hide those dark circles. But your concealer will just look cakey and/or settle into fine lines. Pick a peach colour corrector instead to neutralise the grey-purple under the eyes. The Huda Beauty #FauxFilter Color Corrector, $47 is available in a range of shades to help all skin tones neutralise darkness under the eyes. Plus, it’s lightweight and will wear well under your base.
In fact, skip foundation altogether and opt for a tinted moisturiser, BB or CC cream. These are less likely to cling to any dry patches, feel lighter to wear and look like your-skin-but-better. Try the Hourglass Veil Hydrating Skin Tint, $84 that will smooth skin, provide sheer coverage, diffuse imperfections, boost moisture and add a dewy glow thanks to skin conditioning ingredients like Meadowfoam Seed Oil, plant based squalane, hyaluronic acid and a naturally derived rambutan blend.
Take the focus away from tired eyes with a bold pout. The Fenty Beauty Icon Velvet Liquid Lipstick, $43 envelops lips in a lush, whipped formula that doesn’t feel heavy or drying making it perfect for parched puckers. Lips are soft and comfortable all day. Plus, this and all the other shades are ideal for all skin tones.
