Not sure how to actually apply your products?

1/3

This is the single best bit of advice anyone can possibly give you, IMO: Always pat, never rub. To get the most bang out of your beauty buck, try this technique. Warm up a walnut-sized bit of the product in your palms, then press firmly into your face, paying extra attention to the jowl area and always making sure that your hands are kneading upwards against the forces of gravity.

Beauty bonus: This manual massage also aids in draining excess fluid from your face, and makes for a seriously relaxing ritual at the end of the day, so feel free to indulge in some heavy post-cleansing “patting”!

When it comes to layering, time is of the essence

2/3

Skin still damp? Patience, girlfriend. If you slap on more stuff before the former layer’s had time to sink in, you’re going to “face” a product pilling problem. Pilling is merely makeup jargon for when your skincare clumps up into small little spheres on your skin. These pills of product (hence “pilling”) are incredibly irksome because they are the prime cause of patchy-looking complexion – plus it means your skincare is literally sitting on top without properly penetrating your hide.

But what causes pilling, exactly? Generally speaking, gel- or alcohol-based products may “pill” in the presence of sebum on your skin – in much the same way oil separates and floats on top of water. My ace advice to preventing pilling? Give your face some time after each step to fully absorb each layer before adding the next. A good rule of “thumb” (and I mean this quite literally): If your fingertips feel damp when you press them into your face, give the product another minute, then test again.

Seal in the goodness with a “top coat”

3/3

Oil-based balms function as an absolutely essential “top coat” to prevent us water babies from drying out like prunes, so slick them on as the final step of your routine. By applying a richly restorative oil-based sleeping mask – my money’s on The Body Shop’s sensational Oils of Life Intensely Revitalising Sleeping Cream, $59.90 – after your anti-aging serums, fat-soluble ingredients like glycolic acid, retinol and vitamin E will dissolve that much quicker, tricking your skin into driving the good stuff deeper into the dermis. Pretty neat, yes?

Easy enough, right? Bookmark this story and make it your new bedtime beauty assignment. Good luck, goodnight and good skin!
