Ageing is inevitable and a natural part of life. As much as we love gaining wisdom that comes with age, we don’t fancy losing collagen, which happens to be one of the biggest contributing factors to the signs of ageing.

Why is collagen so important?

Collagen is the main structural protein found in our skin, and is needed to keep the skin plump and youthful-looking. Think of collagen as the support springs in your mattress, which over time, start to lose their firmness, causing the mattress to sag and become lumpy.

That is what happens in our skin as we age. According to Dr Isaac Wong, aesthetic doctor, international CynoSure trainer speaker and medical director of The Artisan Clinic, “it is a well-known scientific fact that our skin loses collagen at two per cent per year” after we reach 30, which is the age “when our collagen production is slower than the collagen breakdown”.

Thus, as we get older, the collagen in our skin decreases, thanks in part to environmental factors like UV damage and pollutants, as well as stress and unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking, having late nights and excessive sugar consumption.

As collagen diminishes, skin loses its elasticity, texture, bounce, shine and glow.

Fortunately, there’s help at hand to keep the signs of ageing – fine lines, wrinkles, skin roughness and sagging – at bay. To the rescue is the new Cynosure 5D BrightenLift treatment.

The Artisan Clinic is one of the first in Southeast Asia to offer this dual-laser treatment that utilises an exclusive and new protocol designed by Dr Wong, which is able to:

It's no wonder it’s a popular treatment among local celebrities such as Sue Tan and Magdalene See.

According to Dr Wong, the Elite IQ laser is a “top of the range long-pulse laser machine” and comes with two laser wavelengths – 755nm and 1064nm.

This is what makes the Elite IQ machine unique as Dr Wong explains that most laser machines offer only one laser wavelength, which means it is able to “do either pigment-reducing, veins-reducing or scars-reducing, and only one effect at a time”. With its dual laser wavelengths, the Elite IQ machine is able to achieve two or three effects at the same time.

In addition, its long pulse properties together with the use of multiple handpieces, are able to target all five layers of the skin, from the surface to the deeper layers, to address a range of skin concerns from dullness and melasma to sagging.

More importantly, “this is also the first laser that can provide a lifting effect, which usually only RadioFrequency or Ultrasound machines could do previously,” says Dr Wong. This, he explains, is achieved as the energy heats up the tissues, to a comfortable 38 to 42 deg C, which is the optimal temperature for producing collagen.

Dr Gan Lee Ping (above) is the go-to doctor for CynoSure 5D BrightenLift at The Artisan Clinic. Since 2021, Dr Gan has clocked more than 100 hours of administering this treatment. And the results, she tells us, have been great.

The treatment begins on one side of your face first. There will be an intense blast of cold air on your skin. This is thanks to the “Zimmer Cryo7 that provides -30 deg C cold air (much like the air from your freezer) onto the skin in a comfortable jet stream together with the laser beam”. Dr Gan explains that this also contributes to the zero downtime after each session.

The doctor will repeat this step four times, each time using a different handpiece and applicator, working from the deepest layer of the skin to the most superficial with each passing round. These work in synergy to create a lifting, tightening, brightening and pigment-reducing effect, she explains.

It takes 30 to 40 minutes for the entire treatment. After the therapist applies moisturiser and sunscreen on your face, you're good to go. You could meet your friends for a meal after and no one would know that you've just spent time at the doctor’s office.

Dr Gan also shares that the effects will only continue to be enhanced over the next few weeks, with the best results seen three weeks later, lasting up to four to six months. For best results, Dr Wong recommends three sessions of the CynoSure 5D BrightenLift treatment every year.

The CynoSure 5D BrightenLift is ideal for those seeking a multi-purpose treatment as it is able to address different ageing concerns in one session. This treatment was invented by CynoSure to provide a pain-free alternative to face-lifting machines, with the added effect of skin brightening.

If stubborn and more persistent pigmentation are your main concerns, the CynoSure PicoSure laser treatment will be better suited for your needs, while the CynoSure TempSure is great for more pronounced skin sagging issues, through the use of radiofrequency energy.

Caring for your skin after a session of 5D BrightenLift is easy as well. Incorporate repairing and moisturising serums, creams and masks after the treatment, and avoid going out under strong sunlight for two days, says Dr Wong.
