Pore-obsessed people, you really need to try this unbelievably easy DIY face scrub – I swear by it on evenings when I just can’t be arsed to follow through with my usual suite of serums and salves.

Preempting any preliminary concerns you may have: If you have reactive skin that doesn’t respond well to extreme exfoliation, you’ll be pleased as punch to know that this scrub does a deft job of purging your pores of gunk and grease – without any extraneous aggravation of your skin to boot.

As always, wee caveat: Always spot test on the nook of your elbow, and start slow; once every week should suffice.

Ready to concoct your very own pore-tightening poultice? The only swag you need on hand are instant oatmeal, baking soda, a dash of lemon juice and that’s it. Embarrassingly easy “recipe”, if you can call it that. Let’s go!

1. Dump about half a cup of dry oatmeal into a mixing bowl; gun for the finely ground variety as “whole” oats are a tad too gritty for the purpose of this exercise. I’m obsessed with oats; besides making for a seriously satisfying snack, this treat is also non-abrasive when applied topically, and serves as a superb sebum absorber to clarify congested complexions.

2. Next, grab a standard teaspoon and sprinkle in a heaping helping of baking soda, which bubbles up in contact with water to create a toner-type lotion that loosens up the icky stuff encrusting your skin.

3. To your oatmeal-baking soda solution, trickle in a touch of freshly squeezed lemon juice for a vitamin C-packed punch. Besides being a natural brightening booster, lemon juice does double duty as an astringent in sweeping away dullness and blackheads without leaving your face uncomfortably tight and stretchy

All you need to do now is to whisk everything together with a spatula to yield a lumpy paste, and you’re done! Use clean fingers to slap it onto freshly cleansed skin, then massage it into your mien using brisk circular motions, taking care to spend a tad more time polishing pimple-prone areas. Let it sit for 30 seconds or so, then splash off with warm water.

With any luck, your skin should be feeling supremely soft, pleasingly plump and pore-free. Try this genius tip the next time your face is feeling congested, and let me know how it goes. Your pores can thank me later!
