Tuberose grown in the French region of Grasse gets the spotlight in this latest creation by Chanel’s in-house perfumer Olivier Polge. An elevated, more intense version of the namesake parfum, this extrait spray is accompanied by two other floral elements: musky jasmine and the slightly sweet ylang ylang. Notes of vanilla and sandalwood make for a sensual and comforting scent.

Nonetheless, Dior’s game-changing creation from its flagship J’adore line (it’s been around since 1999) is a water-based fragrance that claims to have the same lasting power as an eau de parfum. The main star is neroli – the white flowers of bitter oranges that are prized for their light, sweet and zesty notes. Notes of jasmine sambac and Chinese magnolia meld together to give to create one velvety fragrance.

Christine Nagel, Hermes’ in-house perfumer, sought to answer that by combining violets – sourced exclusively from Tourrettes-sur-Loup in southeastern France – and Volynka Russian leather which is used to produce the brand’s Kelly bag. The powdery, delicateness of the violet, mixed with the masculine, almost burnt woodiness of the leather evokes a comforting sensuality.
