“As a makeup artist, I always tell my clients—your beauty routine should evolve as you do. Our skin texture, our preferences, even our lifestyle changes over the years. But just because your skin is maturing doesn’t mean you need to lose confidence in how you look. In fact, with a few thoughtful tweaks, your makeup can look better than ever.

There’s no set age where you need to overhaul everything. What matters is paying attention. If your foundation isn’t sitting right, or if products that once worked start feeling off, that’s your skin’s way of asking for something new.

One of the most common changes I see? Dryness. As we age, skin tends to lose moisture more easily. That’s why I always emphasise hydration first. A good moisturiser—or a hydrating primer—can transform how makeup sits on the skin. When the skin is well-prepped, you’ll actually find you need less makeup for that radiant finish.

Skin prep is everything. I always say: take care of your skin first. That means using a moisturiser and sunblock suited to your skin type before anything else.

And—never skip primer! A great primer doesn’t just help your makeup stay on longer, it also blurs fine lines and smooths the texture of your skin. It makes the foundation glide on so much better. My tip? Let it settle for a minute or two before moving on. Rushing this step can compromise the final look.

When it comes to actual makeup application, my mantra is simple: less is more. You should never try to cover fine lines with heavy concealer—it only highlights them. For pigmentation issues or sun spots, go for highly pigmented products but use them sparingly. Instead of overloading your face, draw attention to a feature—your eyes, lips, or hair—as a focal point.

As for powder? Use it with a light touch. If you’re already wearing concealer or foundation, you don’t need a pigmented powder on top. Just set the areas that need it and leave the rest to breathe.

Foundation is such a personal thing—some love full coverage, others don’t. If you find one too heavy, mix it with moisturiser or primer to customise the texture to your liking.

Don’t let anyone tell you to “match your makeup to your age.” That’s not how it works. Choose shades—like blush or eyeshadow—based on your skin tone and personality, not a number. If you love a colour, wear it. If it makes you happy, that’s what matters.

For brows and eyes, it’s about what suits your face, not trends. Pick a brow shape that complements your features and wear whatever eyeshadow shade brings you joy. It’s all about balance and having friends tell you when you look strange.

Honestly, the best makeup look is the one that makes you feel like your most confident self. Don’t be afraid to experiment, and don’t get too caught up in “rules.” If you like how you look, that’s all that matters.

Live for yourself. That’s my best beauty advice.”
