8 niche bag brands from $249 that you won’t see your office colleagues carrying
The algorithm hasn’t exactly found these niche bags or even their brands yet, which is exactly why they’re worth your attention

Last month, I was having lunch with a friend when I noticed the bag slung over her chair, which had a shape I didn’t recognise. And that’s saying something, given I’ve been obsessively writing about them for over a decade. It had the dangle-off-a-cool-girl-shoulder look of a hobo, the rigour of a hunting bag, and came in a navy suede that felt too elegant to be sporty but too utilitarian to be dainty. A silver magnetic twist lock, more Jean Arp sculpture than hardware, cinched the whole thing together.
I asked what it was. She said Savette, then raised her steak knife and told me to keep it on the down low. Unfortunately for her, me the next time we meet, and the 95,000 Instagram fans the brand has, the secret now lives here, in this article about niche bags.
Niche bags and even their brands have always functioned a little like trophies in a “I found, I bought, I now have bragging rights” way, but more than a caption-friendly play on Caesar’s phrase, it also signifies a specific cultural capital: “I have economic tastes, but I’m still discerning and fashion-forward.”
The most recent example of the niche bags phenomenon was in 2016 when the brand Polène launched and birthed a breed of bags that were tasteful, polite, and algorithm-approved. These were bags that boasted a unique silhouette, which also had the quiet makings of a designer one, and more importantly, they were affordable. We could afford to buy one and then traipse around the city while carrying it, making poorer financial choices. Girl math would have declared it a net positive, if not a minor capital-efficient decision.
But tastes shift, quality slips, and the internet eventually turns on such brands, and sometimes even on itself. Which is how we find ourselves here, with a new crop of under-the-radar bags from brands that are unbothered (…for now), beautifully put-together, and still just niche enough to whisper of interesting taste.
The shopper tote that fits everything: Knotted Layer Bag, KRW279,000 (S$249), Archivépke
Archivépke is shaping up to be Seoul’s next big thing, thanks to its rugged silhouettes and impossibly soft leathers. This oversized shopper naturally collapses and drapes as you move, giving it that artfully unstructured look niche-bag lovers treat as a personality trait. Adjustable knotted straps let you switch up the length, while the smooth lambskin used delivers the subtle variations in grain and texture that make each piece feel individual.
The top handle bag that’s perfect for dinner: Lume Forme Tote Bag, USD$240 (S$313), Atelier de Lumen
Old-world shapes meet old-money charm here with this Atelier de Lumen bag that’s executed with new-world Seoul precision. The Lune Forme’s crescent-curved frame comes in a soft black box leather with a subtle sheen, and an oak brown oiled pull-up with a matte, lived-in depth. A slim gold clasp and hardware punctuate the silhouette without overwhelming it, and it also comes with a detachable strap for tote, shoulder, or cross-body wear.
The East-West bag that’s on trend: Le Bateau Patent Bag, EUR$450 (S$679), Elleme
Paris by way of pragmatism, Elleme’s Le Bateau is a sleek east-west shoulder bag built with a structured silhouette and zero fussy excess. And if this wine-red version is not your jam, there’s always the black pebbled option waiting in the wings. Signature buckles anchor the design, and in a detail even major luxury brands routinely forget, it comes with protective metal feet—a small mercy for anyone who has to place their bag on the floor.
The cute crossbody that’s perfect traveling: Mini Swann, $760, Fleuron
French polish meets Tuscan leather discipline in Fleuron’s Mini Swann, a supple little silhouette with an elongated shoulder strap and a grained calf-leather body lined in breathable microsuede you can simply wipe down. Its sides open and fold back with hidden magnets, a small, wing-beat motion that shifts the bag from airy to contained depending on your mood. And if variety is your thing, it’s available in a kaleidoscopic range of 29 colours.
The work tote with a twist: Max Bag, USD$804 (S$1,047) Mieti Studio
Barcelona cool with a streak of leather experimentation, the Max Bag takes its sweeping silhouette from the aerodynamic curves of a Formula 1 car. Grained cow leather gives it a supple-but-structured feel, allowing it to hold a laptop without losing its sculptural refinement. And, every detail from its hand-painted edges to the suede-lined interior and braided top handles reflects Mietis Studio’s philosophy of contemporary craft with attitude.
The understated shoulder bag: Large Tondo Hobo, USD$1,990 (S$2,592), Savette
Structured, understated, and blissfully free of noise, these qualities make Savette’s Large Tondo Hobo the thinking woman’s status bag. Lined in supple suede just like its body, it’s easily recognisable by Savette’s signature Tondo magnetic lock, while an interior pocket and adjustable shoulder strap keep things practical. It even measures just large enough to fit a small iPad.
The weekend bag that matches everything: Clementine Bag, USD$350 (S$456), The Horse
Australian minimalism done right with simple lines, supple leather, and an allergic avoidance of loud logos. The Clementine’s curved, architectural shape is crafted from soft scratch-and-water resistant pebbled leather that’s also slouchy enough to give it its easy, relaxed posture. Hand-painted trims, a curved top handle, and an adjustable strap keep it comfortable in every carry, and it comes with protective feet.
The understated bag that everybody wants: Gyoza Bag, US$832 (S$1,083), Yuzefi
A London city–girl favourite, Yuzefi’s bags are known for their striking colours, clever shapes, and leathers you can spot across a room. The Gyoza is one of its structural signatures, a sculpted top-handle silhouette crafted in Spain from luxurious Italian Angora pebble-grained leather and finished with understated gold-tone hardware. Inside, a wipe-clean polyamide–polyurethane lining keeps the bag practical enough for real life without compromising its polish.
