Acai has enjoyed its status as a superfood for a while now, but the concept of acai bowls is still relatively new. However, five-week old Project Acai at Holland Village might have just catapulted this unique dessert into the limelight.

Project Acai serves up delicious, guilt-free acai desserts using organic acai berries from popular US company Sambazon. Besides acai bowls, which come in handy ($6.80), medium ($9.30) and large ($13.50) sizes, there are also three smoothies ($8.50 each) to choose from, with fun names like “Beach Body To-Go” and “Where My Chocolate Abs?”.

Our medium acai bowl comprised organic acai puree (blended on the spot), generously sprinkled with a medley of fruits, granola, chia seeds, cacao nibs, coconut shavings, goji berries and bee pollen. It was oh-so-light on the palate, but hearty enough to make for a meal on its own.

Prices might seem a little steep, but co-owner Melissa Ng tells us that we’re essentially paying for guiltless indulgence. “We hope that people will recognise the value of what they’re eating. Acai is an amazing source of antioxidants, and it’s low GI, so it’ll help you to feel full for longer,” she shares. The dairy-free bowls and smoothies also have no added sugar, making them a far healthier alternative than their soft-serve and froyo counterparts. Here’s to a dessert that you can actually feel virtuous eating!
