Some of the odd-sounding combinations may make you raise an eyebrow, but trust us, these 10 snowskin delights are all scrumptious.

EDITOR’S RAVE
1 PANDAN KAYA WITH ROASTED MACADAMIA NUTS
$58.30 for a box of eight (assorted flavours), from Antoinette outlets, including 30 Penhas Road, tel: 6293-3121.
This had the best texture – the luxurious smoothness of fragrant coconut and pandan paste was punctuated by the crunch of lightly musky macadamia nuts and wrapped in soft, thin snowskin. Pity it’s not sold individually; other flavours in the box include seaweed, chestnut, osmanthus, water chestnut and dark chocolate lotus paste.

2 SNOW SKIN MOONCAKE WITH LYCHEE MARTINI CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE
$76.05 for eight, from Mandarin Oriental, Singapore, tel: 6885-3081.
The delicate sweetness of the lychee paste romances your taste buds before the alcohol in the middle spurts out and kicks in – a hit with both the male and female taste-testers.

3 GRAND MARNIER CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE SNOW SKIN

$64.20 for a box of eight (assorted flavours), from Bakerzin outlets, including #02-09 Paragon, tel: 6333-6647.
Strictly for adults, this mooncake is part of a collection of four alcoholic flavours. The other three (frangelico, pink champagne and whisky) are yummy too, but this decadent chocolate paste variety with its heady burst of Grand Marnier (an orange-flavoured cognac) is a standout.

4 “LIMITED EDITION” BLACK THORN DURIAN NYONYA MOONCAKE IN COCONUT MINI SNOWSKIN
$81.32 for eight, from Peony Jade restaurants, including #02-02 Clarke Quay, 3A River Valley Road, tel: 6659-4159/4918/4161.
The deliciously pungent, pulpy paste is wrapped in a coconut-infused snowskin that’s tinged a pretty blue from bluebell flowers – the combination is reminiscent of durian pengat.

5 IMPERIAL JADE
$58 for eight, from Grand Park City Hall, Grand Park Orchard & Park Hotel Clarke Quay, tel: 6432-5555.
The mellow taste of the dense coconut paste wrapped in a subtle pandan fragrance reminds us of the kaya custard in Peranakan kueh salat.

6 MINI SNOW SKIN JAPANESE YUZU CHEESE MOONCAKE

$56.71 for eight, from Mandarin Orchard, tel: 6831-6320/6262.
The skin was a tad lumpy, but it melted in the mouth together with the fluffy, tangy cloud of yuzu cheesecake paste within. It was so light, we were able to polish off two mooncakes at one go!

7 PHOENIX SUPREME
$10.15 for one; $66.35 for eight, from Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore, tel: 6213-4448/6213-4473.
Kudos for taking the concept of mooncake-and-tea pairing to a new level – this snowskin treat has a molten centre of oolong tea-infused jelly, which releases a pleasant floral flavour.

8 ITALIAN ROAST COFFEE PASTE WITH VANILLA BEAN CUSTARD
$8 for one; $60 for eight, from Singapore Marriott Hotel, tel: 6831-4708.
If we’d eaten this with our eyes closed, we might have mistaken it for a rich coffee cake, thanks to the creamy vanilla bean core and luscious, bittersweet coffee paste.

9 CALAMANSI, KUMQUAT AND SOUR PLUM SNOWSKIN MOONCAKE

$29.96 for two; $51.36 for four, from Goodwood Park Hotel, tel: 6730-1867/1868.
The tangy citrus flavour and chewy bits of sour plum in this slightly gummy treat provide a refreshing jolt – a great addition to any mooncake party.

EDITOR’S RAVE
10 MINI RED VELVET SNOWSKIN MOONCAKE
$68.48 for eight, from Carlton Hotel Singapore, tel: 6349-1292.
Finally! Someone has turned our favourite cake into a mooncake, and with great success, too. It’s chocolatey but not too sweet, with a velvety paste and ball of cream cheese that had us swooning from the first bite.

TRADITIONAL BAKED MOONCAKES
If you prefer the classic combination of lotus paste and salted egg yolks, then check out our top eight picks.

1 WHITE LOTUS SEED PASTE WITH SINGLE YOLK
$15.50 for one; $64 for four, from Singapore Marriott Hotel, tel: 6831-4708.
This had the lightest and most fragrant lotus paste of the bunch – it had just the right touch of sweetness, so we felt we could eat more of it. What could be better, however, was the slightly dry salted yolk.

2 WHITE LOTUS PASTE WITH SINGLE YOLK AND MELON SEEDS
$37.45 for two; $63.13 for four, from Regent Singapore, tel: 6725-3239.
A few of us found this a tad cloying, but others thought the dense, slightly sticky lotus paste was the most satisfying of the lot. The yolk was crumbly but not dry, and each wedge of mooncake we cut out held together neatly.

3 WHITE LOTUS PASTE WITH SINGLE YOLK
$18.20 for one; $68.50 for four, from Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore, tel: 6213-4448/6213-4473.
The base of the mooncake was a little too oily, but the crust and lotus paste were soft and delicate. The firm egg yolk in the middle had just the right amount of salt to balance the overall taste.

4 SINGLE YOLK WITH LOTUS PASTE
$64.20 for four, from Marina Mandarin, tel: 6845-1118.
Not too oily, not too dry, and not too sweet, this well-balanced goodie had a soft, grainy egg yolk with a healthy dose of salt. Yum!

5 WHITE LOTUS SEED WITH DOUBLE YOLK MOONCAKE
$70.62 for four, from The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, tel: 6434-5286.
This had the best salted egg yolks among those we tasted – the texture seemed grainy on the outside, but exceptionally creamy towards the centre. It also had a distinct flavour that cut through the sweetness of the lotus paste.

6 WHITE LOTUS SEED PASTE WITH SINGLE YOLK
$33.17 for two; $60.99 for four, from Intercontinental Singapore, tel: 6820-8519/8520.
The yolk was flavourful and matched the mild, sweet, green bean flavour of the lotus paste well. The crust also had a toasty taste that we particularly liked.

EDITOR’S RAVE
7 CLASSIC PREMIUM EGG YOLK MOONCAKE
$70.62 for four, from Bakerzin outlets, including #01-27 Vivocity, tel: 6438-8700.
Unlike other mooncakes that contain a whole yolk, this one has an even layer of salted egg yolk spread across the middle of the lotus paste, so every bite is guaranteed to have the right proportion of sweet and salty. We liked the soft, crumbly crust as well.

8 PROSPEROUS PIGGIES WITH SILVER LOTUS PASTE, MACADAMIA NUTS AND SINGLE YOLK
$38.52 for two; $69.55 for four, from Peony Jade restaurants, including #02-02 Clarke Quay, 3A River Valley Road, tel: 6659-4159/4918/4161.
It tugged at our heartstrings to chop up this adorable baked piglet, but we didn’t regret it – the thick, crumbly crust gave way to a filling of smooth, not-too-sweet lotus paste specked with chopped macadamia and a tasty salted egg yolk.

All mooncakes are available until Sept 8. Prices listed include prevailing GST and/or service charge.
