This coffee shop in the East is one of my favourite spots for supper, because it offers a really extensive range of food to satisfy any sort of midnight cravings. There is Indian fare like prata and butter chicken, dim sum, regular Chinese zi char dishes as well as Western cuisine such as fish and chips and chicken cutlet. They also serve up a long list of beverages and desserts so you won’t even need to go elsewhere for afters.

Craving for a warm comforting bowl of bak kut teh at 3am? Then this is the best place to go. They offer two versions: the Hokkien one which is more herbal and spice heavy, as well as the peppery Teochew styled ones. If you’re looking for something lighter, pair your bak kut teh with yutiao by dipping those dough sticks in your soup, rather than have the broth with rice.
SENG KEE BLACK CHICKEN HERBAL SOUP

Mee sua (Chinese vermicelli) is not commonly found in many eating places in Singapore, especially ones that are as good as the bowls served at Seng Kee. The mixed pork organ mee sua is a favourite amongst those who frequent here thanks to the generous portions and the very thick, flavourful gravy, which features a gorgeous dark brown hue. The noodles themselves, made very soft, are an absolute delight to slurp down. But I’m more a fan of their perfectly crispy fried mee sua, which feels more like a snack than a proper meal.

This Korean dessert café has several outlets in Singapore, but only the ones in Bugis and Bukit Timah open for 24 hours. They offer a variety of bingsu, toasts and rice cakes, although it is the former that is the star attraction. Recommended bingsus to try include the Black Sesame Bingsu and the Snow White Bingsu. The Black Sesame features fine sesame powder, a huge dollop of red bean paste and powdered Korean soybean rice cakes, while the Snow White comprises a unique combination of white chocolate, cheese and macadamia nuts.

We love, love the durian shaved ice from this local desserts café. Shaved ice is topped with a scoop of flavourful durian ice cream and a thick dollop of D24 durian flesh. Think durian ice kachang is good? You’ll change your mind when you have this one. Besides shaved ice desserts, they also serve up local desserts like yam paste, soya beancurd pudding and tang yuan, as well as waffles topped with ice cream.

The signature in this humble little café at Serangoon is their sweet and savoury red velvet waffles. Drizzled with maple syrup, the dessert comes with a scoop of ice cream of your choice. The cream cheese filling within the waffles is the real star however. Melty, gooey cheese oozes out as you cut into those fluffy, crispy waffles. A midnight snack that you definitely want seconds of.

For a late-night sweet tooth craving, there’s always the famed 2am: Dessert Bar, which opened by the doyenne of pastries and sweets Janice Wong. There are classics such as the Chocolate Tart and Tiramisu, as well as more contemporary creations such as the Truffle Infinity (truffle chocolate mousse, caramel, inaya cocoa sorbet, basil, and hazelnut nougatine) and the Shades of Green (pistachio sponge, coco mousse, and pandan ice cream). Each dessert comes with a recommended alcohol pairing – it is a bar, after all – that ranges from sakes and sherries to whiskies and gins. The bar also offers savoury bites such as squid ink bites and Portobello fries for those who are craving for something else.

Enjoy Southeast Asian inspired cocktails while munching on bar snacks with local flavour at this rooftop bar. Our favourites on the food menu are the chilli crab fries, featuring waffle-cut fries with a chilli sauce and blue crab dip, as well as the bacon lollipop, which is pancetta nuggets glazed with maple syrup, groundnuts and pho herbs. For drinks, we love the Asian inspired ones including the Singapore Sour (vodka, sour plum extract, calamansi and soda) as well as the Uncle Tee-Kee (gin, passion fruit & cranberry sorbet, vanilla beans, ginger ale, and fresh mint)

If you’re looking for a more stylish space to nurse those midnight cravings, this Ginza-style bar will definitely fit the bill. It is styled to look like a gentlemen’s club, with masculine hues, leather armchairs and a teak wood bar. They serve mainly cocktails here – the sherries come highly recommended as the owner and head bartender Daiki Kanetaka is a certified venenciados – but they also offer a small selection of snacks such as cheeses and soups.

Those dim sum cravings can hit hard at night and it’s a good thing that Swee Choon opens till 6am. I love almost everything here. There are Hong Kong styled and Shanghainese styled dim sum offered here. The usual suspects like the siew mai and har kow feature generous fillings. There are also more unconventional picks like the fried custard pumpkin, shaped like a miniature pumpkin that is filled with a smooth and creamy custard filling, and the prawn and banana fritter – the seafood and fruit are covered in a batter that is deep fried for a delicious sweet and savoury sensation.
THE RAMEN STALL

Craving for Japanese cuisine in the wee hours of the night? Head to the Ramen Stall, where it stays open until 6am. The ramen is adapted to the local palate, so instead of thick, flavoursome Tonkotsu broths in traditional Japanese versions, they serve most ramen with a lighter chicken broth. But if you prefer it rich and flavourful, there is Beef Ramen, which comes with stock that is boiled for an extra four hours with beef shank. If you like things spicy, the Volcano Ramen is a must-try. The soup is mixed with red chillies and dried Indian chilli padi to create an invigorating dish not for the faint-hearted.
HAI DI LAO

Steamboat is best eaten at night, when the weather feels cooler than in the day. Say steamboat, and Hai Di Lao comes to mind immediately. They have a good range of soup bases: chicken, mushroom, tomato, seafood, laska and spicy Sichuan. You can choose to add up to four broths, so you can taste a little bit of everything. Order the handmade noodles, which has really nice texture and elasticity, as well as their specialty beef balls – juicy with a just the right chewy consistency.
