For a classic, fuss-free French toast, Miam Miam offers up one of the best ones out there. Served in bite-sized chunks, the toast has a very noticeable egg taste in it and is extremely soft and fluffy. It is sprinkled with icing sugar, drizzled with maple syrup and topped with a perfectly light and frothy dollop of whipped cream.
For Singapore-inspired kaya French toast
Ah Seng (Hai Nam) Coffee
#02-95, Amoy Street Food Centre, 7 Maxwell Rd.
Ya Kun’s kaya French toasts are admittedly decent. But no one does it like Ah Seng. The French toast at this humble hawker stall is toasted over charcoal, so you get that old-school, smoky flavour that you don’t get elsewhere. Pair the bread, well covered in egg wash, with the kaya that is smeared on the side. The jam is smooth and not overly sweet, making for an easy breakfast treat that isn’t too heavy.
For Hong Kong-style deep fried French toast
Café De Hong Kong
#01-01, 586 Balestier Rd, tel: 6255-3865.
Hong Kong-style French toasts, served at cha chaan tengs, are thicker (usually made from two bread slices) and deep fried to a crispy golden brown hue. The one at Café De Hong Kong is slathered with peanut butter in the middle, making for a very filling treat, and is served with honey drizzle and a thick slab of butter at the top. Toast itself was chewy and delicious, although I would have preferred it to be slightly crispier. It comes in a huge portion, so make sure you are sharing!

Maison Ikkoku’s French toast is a heart attack waiting to happen. Drenched with a sweet and savoury salted caramel sauce, the thick toast features chunks of caramelised banana, walnuts and sour cream, making for an arresting array of flavours and textures. It is available only on the weekends.
For a savoury French toast

We’re going to spoil the surprise for you: crowned with a medley of seasonal fruits, this French toast has a hidden meat stew centre that makes this dish even suitable for lunch or dinner. The toast is suitably soft and fluffy, but it is the contrasting sweet and savoury flavours that make this a must-try.

Molten salted egg yolk surprises are everywhere nowadays that they have stopped becoming a surprise, but that doesn’t mean they don’t taste good. Cut into 7Kickstart’s French toast and a golden hue oozes out to create an Insta-worthy picture. The salted egg yolk might be a smidge too salty on its own, but it’s perfect when you soak it up with the soft brioche that is drizzled with condensed milk.
