1 Pick the right markets
"What you sell should be in sync with the crowd's demands. Public Garden and Sunday Artists Market at The Vault are more artsy – you'll get a decent audience if you're selling handmade accessories and stationery. Zouk's Flea & Easy sees more pre-loved items while festive pop-up markets – during Christmas and Chinese New Year – are good for greeting cards or home decor items."

2 Be proactive
"The location of your stall is decided on the day itself. If you get one where human traffic isn't high, ask the organisers nicely to put up clearer directions or help to usher the crowd."

3 Make your display pop
"If you're selling jewellery or handmade accessories, display them like a counter showcase. Use wine crates, ceramic plates and astroturf (fake grass) to prop up chunky, statement pieces and brightly-coloured products. A nice tablecloth is also a must. List prices clearly. When your stall gets crowded, it helps if people can check the prices on their own – if you're busy, they may just walk away."

4 Use social media
"Some people stop by my stall and ask to take a photograph with my pinatas. I'm happy to oblige even if they don't buy, but I ask them to create a hashtag or tag me in the picture. This leads to exposure on Instagram and Facebook and brings people to my website."
