This comprised a scalp analysis, followed by a pampering treatment tailored to my dry and sensitive scalp. I particularly enjoyed how my therapist, May, used Ayurvedic massage techniques to apply hair tonic onto my scalp – the kneading strokes eased tension and stimulated blood flow. I also appreciated the pleasant botanical scent of the hair products. After the session, my scalp felt squeaky clean, as if a layer of gunk had been lifted. – Delle Chan, features writer

$228 for 90min. Botanics Creation Hair Studio & Hair Spa, #03-11/12 Pacific Plaza, 9 Scotts Road, tel: 6235-0362, www.botanicscreation.com
An analysis with head consultant Jennifer showed my hair was thinning and falling. My follicles were clogged and the skin at the back of my head was dehydrated, which she said was a sign of insufficient sleep. The session began with a head and shoulder massage that immediately relaxed me. Then, a hair lotion and hair mask were applied. I was given a lymphatic massage to improve circulation, as well as oxygen therapy to revitalise my tresses and stimulate growth. After a shampoo, the therapist smoothed a serum onto my scalp and ended the session with a blow-dry. My hair felt bouncier and softer, even after my regular shampoo the next morning. – Mary Lim, contributing beauty editor

$160 for 60min. Svenson, #09-06/07 International Building, 360 Orchard Road, tel: 1800-7777-333, www.svensonhair.com.sg
The 20-minute scalp analysis was an eye- opener: I learnt I had a genetic predisposition to hair loss as several men in my family are balding, while a scan revealed slight congestion on my scalp, likely due to product build-up. For starters, an ice-cold cleansing mask ($80, not included in the treatment) was applied to treat the congestion. Following this was a steady jet of saline solution (to help exfoliate dead cells), after which an anti-hair loss serum was applied to strengthen the roots. I was pleased to notice slightly less hair fall over the next few days. – Priscilla Kham, sub-editor

Kento Special Spa/Hair Loss Treatment
$180 for 45min. Branche, #B1-33 Capitol Piazza, 13 Stamford Road, tel: 6702-3036, www.branche.sg
After a quick scalp analysis, spa technical officer and stylist Kento concluded that my slightly oily scalp showed signs of fatigue and hair thinning, but nothing a monthly hair spa couldn’t treat. An invigorating scalp cleanse offered a prelude to more promising moments: a nourishing, lather-rich shampoo to clear product build-up, a luxurious fruit-based, silicone-free treatment mask and 15 minutes of the most divine and dream-inducing massage ever. A post-treatment scalp analysis revealed my hair was revived and healthier. After a blow-dry and quick spray of an after-care scalp water – which Kento recommended I use daily – my scalp felt refreshed while my hair looked super shiny and bouncy, effects that lasted for the next three days. – Veronica Chng, contributing copy editor

$318 for 120min. J’s Salon, Level 3 Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel, tel: 6834-0012/6738-8488, www.js.com.sg
An analysis showed my scalp was normal, with no hair loss or thinning, although my follicles needed care and hair density could be increased. My therapist freshened up my feet with warm towels scented with rosemary essential oil, before giving me a warm neck and shoulder massage. The head massage was excellent, as she pressed all the right spots. A peeling purifier was then applied to remove dead skin cells, followed by a shampoo and rinse. Then, a hair-growth tonic and a hair-densifying mask were applied, after which my head was cold-steamed for 15 minutes. Throughout, there were head, neck and even arm massages. After rinsing, my hair was blow-dried. The out-of-this-world treatment is something I’d return for. – Lim Tsiao Hui, consumer and lifestyle editor

From $288 to $500 for 120min. Jean Yip Hair Spa, #04-01 Westgate, 3 Gateway Drive, tel: 6369-9259, www.jeanyipgroup.com
The two-hour treatment uses in-house herbal products to target dandruff, hair loss, hair thinning and greying hair. A pre-treatment analysis revealed I had an oily, sensitive scalp. My therapist, Cloe, used a machine to detoxify my scalp, before applying a cleansing lotion and giving me an herbal shampoo wash. I was led to the dimly lit treatment room – with a super- comfy chair and a soft blanket – to enjoy a relaxing face, neck and shoulder massage, as well as a customised scalp and hair mask. The next step after shampooing was the O3 machine therapy to improve absorption of nutrients from an anti-hair loss tonic. Finally, my hair was blow-dried and styled. The service was excellent and I felt so pampered throughout! – Trixia Carungcong, deputy editor

$348 for 150min. PHS Hairscience, #05-25A/B Ngee Ann City, tel: 6692-0662, ww.phshairscience.com
A hair analysis with branch manager Destiny showed I had a combination scalp – oily on the crown with clogged follicles – some flaking at the sides and dry hair ends. She suggested I switch to a gentle, daily shampoo. During the treatment, the therapist brushed my scalp before applying a detox mask and oxygen therapy for the next 30 minutes. The minty, cooling mask left my scalp refreshed. She followed with a shampoo, conditioner, neck and back massage, serum and calming gel. To end, my hair was blow-dried and styled before another scan. This time, the hair follicles on my crown appeared open and clean, while my sides looked hydrated. The perks offered, like the massage chair and iPad to watch movies on, made the entire experience very indulgent. – Cheryl Leong, consumer and lifestyle writer
