A number of people are allergic to cheaper metals such as nickel, but some are allergic to more common jewellery materials such as silver as well.

It is frustrating for bauble lovers because it is hard to find necklaces, bracelets and the like without some kind of metal. There is hope, though.

You can look for pieces of jewellery made of fabric, such as ribbon, or plastic and other hard materials such as perspex. Even malleable leather can be used in jewellery in interesting ways.

Take this statement necklace from H&M (photo 1, $49.90, from 1 Grange Road). The centrepiece is made up of crystal flowers but the chain is a pink ribbon that gives the whole look a romantic feel.

The look is reminiscent of French fashion house Lanvin’s statement necklaces, which often feature black ribbon instead of a chain. Pair it with a crewneck or boatneck top so that the crystal will not touch your skin.

Some fabric pieces, such as this long necklace from In Good Company (photo 2, $129, from Level 2 Tangs Orchard), give off a more bohemian feel. Wear it with a modern boxy shift dress to avoid channelling any folksy vibes.

Harder materials such as plastic are great for bracelets. This Pretty Little Things bangle (photo 3, $11, from www.zalora.sg) gives off a party vibe with gold and silver coloured studs set against a black background.

Even leather, which brings to mind punk-inspired collars, can be crafted into nice pieces of jewellery. This Carrie K leather cuff (photo 4, $79, from www.gnossem.com) looks more like metallic filigree, thanks to the artful cut-outs.

If all else fails, turn to light scarves such as these pieces from Jack Wills and Asos Collection (photo 5, $48; and photo 6, $29.50; both from www.asos.com).

Wrapped around your neck, they bring colour and visual interest to your look in a similar way necklaces do.
