We’re not too sure what’s so appealing about the boyfriend clothing trend; it could be the “off-duty celebrity” vibe or the way it looks carelessly thrown on but effortlessly stylish. In some ways, it’s the perfect look for the modern women in the way that it feminises masculine wear.
While these looks may not be appropriate for all workplaces, they do make excellent casual weekend looks. Many brands actually sell clothes that have been labelled “boyfriend”, but here are the ones you can raid from his real closet or buy from menswear brands. An additional upside to this is that many menswear brands are substantially cheaper than womenswear brands!

Flannel shirts have got to be one of a man's greatest fashion staples, because who doesn’t love tartan? Flannels are super simple to wear, and it’s fun to play around with oversized flannel shirts.
You can go super casual and tuck your flannel shirt into a pair of skinny denim jeans. Wear high-heeled boots or pumps for a chic finish to your boyfriend outfit. Image: Topshop
For days when you don’t feel like layering heavily, throw a flannel shirt over a little black midi dress and tie the unbuttoned shirt in the front. Image: Zara, Zalora
If you’re feeling that ‘90s vibe, tuck a white dress shirt into a black or grey skater skirt and tie your flannel around your waist. You can go a step further and channel Britney Spears in her (Hit Me) Baby One More Time music video by pulling on black stockings and donning a pair of black Mary Janes. Image: Zara
Every man will own at least a few dress shirts, which will almost definitely be too big for you. This is good, though, as the boyfriend trend relies on how boyfriend clothing is essentially oversized. Most men wear dress shirts in neutral colours like white, light blue, navy and grey, which leaves the job of adding colour to you.
If you pull a dress shirt out of his closet and it looks like it’s large enough to be a dress for you, that’s perfect! Wear it with safety shorts and slip on a corset to make the most of the corset trend as well! Ideally, your dress shirt should be a light colour like white or sky blue so that you can wear a black corset with it. Image: Mango
If you want to channel island girl vibes, loosely wear the dress shirt so that you can tie the two front ends together to the length of a crop top and match with a brightly coloured pareo! Image: Net-a-Porter, Mango, Zara
Also, did you know that you could turn your man’s dress shirt into a dress? Instead of buttoning the collar around the neck, button the shirt around your bust, leaving the sleeves to hang at your sides. You’ll only be able to start buttoning down the shirt probably after the fourth button. Grab the empty sleeves and tie them in a bow under your bust, effectively cinching your dress! The bigger the shirt, the better, if not the ‘dress’ will be too short. Also, I would advise wearing a crop top or a t-shirt under the dress, to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions. Image: Mango
You can’t get any more “lazy day off” than with a hoodie, but you can also look supremely chic. Many celebs have adopted the ever-comfy pullover hoodie (yes, Kanye) and there are plenty of ways to luxe up a simple hoodie.
One beautiful way to feminise a hoodie is to wear it with a maxi skirt. Contrasting the heavier fabric of the hoodie with the lighter maxi skirt makes a wonderfully dynamic outfit that’s super chic too. Image: Adidas, Net-a-Porter
For a more “celebrity on her day off” kind of vibe, adopt a your boyfriend’s oversized pullover hoodie and wear it over short shorts. Complete this effortlessly sexy look with knee high boots and sunglasses. For a little extra flair, tie a flannel around your waist under your pullover. Be prepared to be mistaken for a celebrity! This look was inspired by Tupac, which will get you looking both cute and feisty at the same time! Don your favourite denim overalls over a dark coloured hoodie and complete it with clean white sneakers. For a cooler look, wear your hoodie with short dungarees. Image: Zalora, Adidas
Every man has a comfy tee that they have had for a number of years. Luckily, this is another piece you can steal thanks to the super chic logo tee trend. While I wouldn’t recommend going in the Vetements direction and wearing a DHL tee, lazily half-tucking your large tee into some denim skinnies and wearing high heeled pumps looks hot. Put on some chic sunglasses you’ve achieved that effortlessly stylish look that is oh-so-trendy right now. Image: Adidas, Prada, Mango)
Alternatively, substitute your jeans for palazzo trousers and a denim jacket for something that looks a little more #luxe. Image: Net-a-Porter, Mango, Zara
