Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event is typically known for the dazzling mobile hardware reveals, but this year's focus has shifted the spotlight on software instead. The new Samsung Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra phones will be leveraging on artificial intelligence – specifically, the brand’s new Galaxy AI software.

Like other tech companies (we’re looking at you, Google), is currently fascinated by AI. The Galaxy S24 series is packed with features that utilise generative AI. Interestingly, a significant number of these features, although not all, draw their strength from Google's Gemini artificial intelligence model, unveiled late last year.

Pre-order for the Galaxy S24 Series is now available at selected online stores. Consumers who pre-order their Galaxy S24 Series devices will enjoy early delivery and be able to collect or receive their devices from 24 January 2024, Wednesday.

We further unpack the pricing as well as new innovations found within the Galaxy S24 lineup, below.

First, we have to talk about the AI. The Galaxy S24 series introduces Note Assist in Samsung Notes, enhancing organisation with AI-generated summaries, easy-to-use templates, and covers for quick previews. Transcript Assist is another feature that uses AI and Speech-to-Text technology to transcribe, summarise, and translate voice recordings, especially when multiple speakers are involved (a yay for my fellow journalists).

Beyond communication, the Galaxy S24 revolutionises search with Circle to Search, a gesture-driven feature in collaboration with Google. By long-pressing the home button, users can circle, highlight, scribble, or tap anything on the screen to get high-quality search results without leaving the app. This innovative tool offers a seamless way to explore content, discover more about intriguing posts, and obtain generative AI-powered overviews for certain searches, providing context and information from across the web.

If you, like many, are still in your revenge-travel era, you’d be pleased to know that the Galaxy S24 lineup simplifies breaking language barriers, making tasks like chatting with international contacts or booking reservations abroad effortless with Live Translate. This feature provides two-way, real-time voice and text translations for phone calls directly within the native app.

Interpreter offers an instant split-screen translation for live conversations, allowing individuals facing each other to read text transcriptions of what the other person is saying. The best part – this works seamlessly without the need for cellular data or Wi-Fi.

For messaging and other apps, Chat Assist ensures perfect conversational tones, tailoring communication for different contexts such as polite messages to colleagues or catchy social media captions. Additionally, AI integrated into Samsung Keyboard enables real-time message translation in 13 languages.

In the car, Android Auto summarises incoming messages and suggests relevant replies and actions, like sharing your ETA, facilitating connectivity while keeping the focus on the road.

When we’re talking about smartphones these days, we can’t leave out the camera. Samsung’s S24 lineup not only features upgraded hardware – the Ultra, for example, has a new 5x optical zoom lens and a 50MP sensor, delivering optical-quality performance at zoom levels from 2x, 3x, 5x to 10x10 magnification – but also a comprehensive suite of AI-powered tools.

Innovative Galaxy AI editing tools make post-capture edits easy, allowing users to erase, re-compose, and remaster. Edit Suggestion uses Galaxy AI to propose suitable tweaks for each photo, while Generative Edit provides creative control by filling in parts of an image background with generative AI. If an image needs enhancement, a watermark appears in the image and metadata. For action-packed videos, the new Instant Slow-mo generates additional frames based on movements to smoothly slow down moments for a more detailed look.

The Galaxy S24 series features design improvements, including slimmer and reduced bezels, enhancing the immersive viewing experience. These enhancements allow for larger screens on the Galaxy S24+ with a 6.7-inch display and the Galaxy S24 with a 6.2-inch display, maintaining nearly the same size specifications. The Galaxy S24 Ultra boasts a 6.8-inch flatter display, optimised not just for viewing but also for productivity.

Every Galaxy S24 Ultra features the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, optimised for efficient AI processing. All three Galaxy S24 models benefit from adaptive refresh rates ranging from 1 to 120 Hz, enhancing performance efficiency.

Colour-wise, the Galaxy S24 series will be available in what the company deems as “Earth mineral-inspired colours”. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is available in Titanium Gray, Titanium Black, Titanium Violet, and Titanium Yellow, while the Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 are available in Onyx Black, Marble Gray, Cobalt Violet, and Amber Yellow. Additional colours for all three models are available exclusively online.

The Galaxy S24 is available starting from $1,288, the Galaxy S24+ will start retailing from $1,528, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra starts from $1,928.
