HAVE IT OFF THE SHOULDERS

1/8

So your fabrics are weighing you down and your heavy culottes are getting in the way of sex appeal. Rescue the look with an off-shoulder top that shows just the right amount of skin without entering the ‘scantily clad’ territory.

THE ONE-SHOULDER RUFFLE

2/8

Consider the one-shoulder top the fail-proof weapon in your style arsenal if you have broad shoulders or too flat of a cleavage to flaunt. For the former, the ruffles (that only reveal half of your shoulders) create the illusion of a slimmer and narrower décolletage; and the latter issue is resolved because there’s enough volume from the ruffles to distract from your modest assets.

Viscose-blend one-shoulder dress (worn as a top) from Cos. Polyester-blend culottes and canvas sandals from Bimba Y Lola.

CREATE DRAMA WITH BELL SLEEVES

3/8

Here’s an incredible 70s-inspired look (it’s like bell bottoms, except for the arms) that is so easy to layer. Dial up the drama with these bell sleeves under basics like a camisole (as pictured, except this one goes an extra mile with a train) or a little black jacket – sleeves popping out for a nice surprise.

Cotton-blend knitted pullover from Iris & Ink. Silk satin camisole with train and silk chiffon pinstripes pants from DKNY. Slidy Viv leather sandals with crystals embellishments from Roger Vivier.

WEAR RUFFLES ON TOP AND BELOW

4/8

The magic in working a double-ruffled look (as we like to call it) is balance and proportion. If there is too much volume from the ruffles, tone it down in the fabric department: Pick pieces that come in lightweight, summery materials such as silk chiffon and cotton voile.

MAKE IT MASCULINE

5/8

Not all ruffles come in a girly package – take this jacket with a pleated front and a ruffled collar. We opted to wear it as a top this time, because it’s a statement piece that can stand on its own.

MIX WITH TEXTURES

6/8

Match your ruffles with other textures, like this fringe skirt that adds a dash of sass and makes the look less stiff and formal.

WIDEN ITS HORIZON

7/8

Here, we took what would be a formal dress and finished the look with a spiffy pair of unexpected leather mules instead of a more conventional stiletto. The point here is to explore different accessories – switching up just one element can make a dress work both ways, be it casual or formal.

OR, GO CLASSIC

8/8

Ruffles have always been about being flirty and feminine, and there’s nothing more emblematic of that than a straightforward maxi dress.
