Style Q&A: "I am fat but not obese – where do I shop for stylish clothes my size?"
If you are too big for regular-sized clothes and too small for plus-sized fashion, here are some cool shops that carry UK12 to UK16 for stylish everyday wear to gorgeous cocktail dresses.

Plus-sized dresses are way too big for me and depending on the cutting, I usually fit into a UK 14 or UK16 outfit. However, these sizes are so difficult to come by as most shops stock up to a "Large" or UK12. (And seriously, how can a UK6 dress be called "Free Size"?) Hence, my quest to find fashion stops with nice-looking clothes that fit curvy girls like me, and here are some shops you can check out.

This is the place to go to if you need good quality glamorous cocktail dresses and gowns (a-line, trumpet, mermaid and sheath), and skirts (mini, midi and maxi) and chic tops. I especially adore the midi skirts in thick fabrics like jacquard. These hide any bulges and create an elegant ballgroom silhouette. Coast makes you (okay, makes me) want to fill my entire wardrobe with their gorgeous (expensive-looking) skirts! if you prefer personalised service, head down to the boutique at Paragon.

We love the combination of beautiful silhouettes that are modern, classy and stylish. The fairly affordable price points are a plus, and I just like the fact that I am supporting a local brand. You may want to avoid the tube dresses and pleated skirts that are on retail now, which are not flattering on a curvy girls. Go for the straight cuts and fitted skirts, which make you look slimmer. The store may not always display the XL sizes but don't feel shy to ask if there's any stock left. The staff are polite and helpful, too! Anyway I just bought a black Organza Tee Dress, and I absolutely love it! (The peach variant is beautiful but a tad tranlucent from the lower back to hemline - you may need to wear a slip skirt with that.)

One of my top three favourite places to shop when I need a new outfit is Cos (short for Collection Of Style). Their style is minimalist chic - no fancy embellishments etc. They have everything you need to enhance or hide your curves.
On lazy days and days where clothing is the last thing on mind, I would wear one of my roomy COS dresses. They are comfy, come in rich colours and completely hide any bulge - some might say you are wearing a shapeless bag. (Who cares as long as you can't spot my love handles.) They also carry clothes that are fitted and still roomy. The staff are super friendly, professional and helpful, too.
I would suggest that you sign up for their newsletter so you’re kept informed of their launches and sale periods (You don't want to miss this!!).
PSST! Here’s a tip from a local fashion stylist - head down to the Cos store at Westgate as they seem to have more sizes probably because most people tend to shop in town.

If you like high street fashion, Dorothy Perkins is one brand you should check out. This is a good place to get work pants, skirts and dresses, as well as casual weekend dresses, maternity dresses and even swimwear. The only thing I like less about DP is the cap sleeves on most of the dresses. I bothers me because I have fat arms. But that's just me. I know some big girls who are fine with that.

I recently found out that modern contemporary local label In Good Company (IGC) offers large sizes that fit my stocky frame. Their minimalist chic designs may look simple at a glance, but look closer and you would find interesting details that elevate the outfit from plain to plain chic. Every outfit makes you feel comfortable and look stylish. I also adore their collection of geometrical necklace designs that come across as quiet yet expressive statements.

This super cool brand offers not only high street variety and workwear but also beautiful wedding gowns and classy cocktail dresses. They’re a one-stop shop for your entire wardrobe at affordable prices. You can get a simple skirt for £5 (SGD8.50) or an embellished one for £55 (SGD93.65). They do shipped internationally and shipping is not free - though you can check out ASOS to see if they carry the same outfit you were looking for. And if you didn’t already know, ASOS offers free shipping to Singapore. There is a small selection at Metro Paragon that I chanced upon but sizes are limited.

This is the online shopping site to check out if you want to treat yourself to designer pieces at discounted prices. In fact, they carry over 350 brands. Discounts can go up to 80 per cent off the original price tag.
For instance, the Marc Jacobs Crystal-embellished sequinned wool-crepe dress originally priced at £16,786.16 (SGD233,365.75) is now £4196.54 (SGD7,145.90), and this is just a dramatic example. You can also get an Anya Hindmarch tote originally retailing at £1398 (SGD2,380) that cost £615 (SGD1,047) now.
Most items come in large sizes and they run out quickly. New items come in every week, so keep this website bookmarked for awesome discounts. I haven't actually bought anything from here but I have been stalking it every other month.

This is a great place to get good quality everyday basics and a fantastic brand for minimalist chic coldwear for the whole family. (I basically blew my pay on clothes for my toddler - and the infant clothes rarely go on sale.)
More than half my wardrobe is made up of Uniqlo clothes. You get value-for-money tops, bottoms, jackets, innerwear and outwear in all sizes. If you like graphic tees, there's the amazing range of designs under the UT collection. From mummy forums, I know that the Airism Bra Camisole are sought after for breastfeeding mums. And I super love how Uniqlo collaborates ever so often with well-known people and fashion designers like Carine Roitfeld, Alexandre Plokhov of Helmut Lang and Jil Sander. A piece of designer at a fraction of the price? Pure bliss.
I love this brand so much that I forgive them for not having regular discounts and brand membership of any kind. Only some rebate on spendings with UOB JCB Platinum Card which is super not enticing.

This is another awesome site for designer items. The sizes are listed in EU measurements so a UK14 is an EU42, and so on.There’s also free shipping for purchases over US$250, which is pretty easy to reach if you are buying a designer item. While they have a huge size range, bigger sizes get snapped up pretty fast.
