At the height of the pandemic last year, many people were looking for an escape from reality and any chance to hold on to a fantasy is a moment to cherish. Many women found this escapism through one dress – the Puff Dress by LA-based brand Selkie. The organza and tulle Marie Antoinette-esque dress has become the viral Instagram and TikTok dress with the hashtag #puffdress garnering over 2 million views on TikTok.

On Instagram, #selkie has over 67,000 posts. The dresses are hand-made in small batches, catering to all sizes from XXS to 5X. A Selkie fan will tell you this is not a dress you want but a dress you desire. And because of the way it’s designed - it hugs your bosoms and it flares out at the usual “problem” spots - it’ll always have a flattering silhouette on any woman no matter their body type.

Cara Delevigne and Rita Ora are some of Hannah Beth Fincham’s first customers when she started out in 2014, embellishing leather jackets with studs. Fincham’s moved on from leather jackets and sweatshirts to a vision far more unique.

Today, from her vast collection of vintage pieces, she has created a range of timeless interchangeable pieces - a corset with add-ons whether its sleeves, straps or belts - the options are endless. Her design idea is based on her design philosophy for you to be your own stylist so each look is versatile and completely adaptable. All of Fincham’s designs are handmade in London, based on a slow and sustainable approach.

If you’re a TikToker, you’ll probably be familiar with the term “cottagecore”. Picture a scene straight out of a Jane Austen novel – an aesthetic framed by the romance of rural life. Now with that in mind, imagine yourself in a pink tulle dress with red sequin strawberry embellishments. That’s the Lirika Matoshi’s Strawberry dress that was trending all over social media in 2020, complete with the cutest unboxing video of the dress courtesy of Cosplay TikToker @mailleur_maker.

Kosovo-Albanian fashion designer Lirika Matoshi’s fashion path is not your usual one. She’s a fashion school reject and self-trained designer who started out as an Etsy seller but one day she designed “The Strawberry Dress” (yes google that) and the rest as they say, is fashion history.

4. THE SCALLOP-SLEEVED DRESS

When Gen Z content creator and style blogger, Reese Blutstein @double3xposure wears your design, you know you’re on the radar of the fashionably approved. Siberian-born London-based designer Naya Rea’s dresses have been on the IG radar for some time, but she’s since hit it big time as the dresses are now being stocked at luxury e-tailers Moda Operandi and Shopbop.

The latest Naya Rea must-have piece that caught our eye is the Alya dress. Everyone’s obsessed with a good sleeve detail. There’s just something about an oversized shoulder design that elevates the desirability of a dress. Besides the eye-catching sleeves, the dress also gets two-thumbs up for its bare-back detail and scalloped-hem design. Rea’s dresses are very easy to wear and thoughtfully manufactured (she uses organic cotton fabric and dead stock) as the people she works closely with are mainly family-run businesses, so most of her pieces are made in small quantities.

The Ukrainian brand broke into the scene in 2018 with its famous Atlanta dress - a maxi dress with oversized puffy sleeves. In 2014, two former fashion magazine editors, Kate Zubarieva and Aysa Varetsa, wanted to create elegant sleepwear that can be worn out of the bedroom. The brand is definitely one of the pioneers in the world of affordable yet chic loungewear. Everyone from Pandora Sykes to Emily Ratajkowski, Leandra Medine have been spotted in some seriously stylish nightwear be it as a street style look or on their IG accounts.

What we’re crushing on right now is the brand’s Party Pyjamas Set with Feathers. If you’re unsure how to style it, there’s plenty of style inspo from the IG’s most savvy trendsetters in the link below.
