Wagashi is the collective name for traditional Japanese confectionery. These beautifully crafted cakes are usually too pretty to eat – although they are as tasty as they appear.

It was with wagashi in mind that Singapore brand Raoul created its Cruise 2014 colour palette. Mint-green and aduki bean pink domes of mocha, black-sesame ice cream and custard-yellow sweet steamed buns have been translated from the dessert plate into candy sweet hues.

Even the patterns for the Cruise 2014 collection have been inspired by another type of confectionery but this time they looked to Europe for the traditional German Battenberg cake. When this sponge cake is cut, the cross-section displays a two-by-two check print in alternating colours. The same series of regular blocks in an irregular pattern of mint-green, baby-pink and black has been named the Battenberg print by Raoul.

This playful print is seen on the Cruise collection’s silk shantung shorts and pantsuits and even crepe de chine shift dresses. The candy-theme is consistently seen through the various looks – for instance, a pastel-striped two-piece shorts suit reminds us of local dessert kueh lapis!

Even if pastel-sweet colours aren’t your cup of tea, you will still be able to escape into this wonderful, delicious world of Raoul’s Cruise 2014 collection with pieces featuring the marvellous monochromatic pattern – the Alice print.

The Raoul Cruise 2014 collection will be available in November 2013 at #02-49 Paragon Shopping Centre and #B2-17 The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.
