Mifuyu Kuek and Garret Lee had a whirlwind tour of Taiwan for their pre-wedding photoshoot that was completed within a day!
The couple, who are both interior designers by profession, shared that the main driving force behind their wedding shoot concept was their shared interested in architectural forms and interior design.
"We wanted the shoot to reflect our personality traits as designers, and opted for bolder and less conventional locations for our shoot in Taiwan. However, we also incorporated several scenic locales, like an industrial-themed cafe and by the beach. This was done in respect to our parents’ wishes as they are on the more traditional side", says Mifuyu.
How did you work with your photographer on your concept?
"We chanced upon our bridal photography team from Taiwan during their roadshow at a mall 3 years ago and chose Taiwan over Singapore as it offered a cooler climate which would be easier on my husband (as opposed to the sweltering heat of Singapore) as he would be in formal suits.
Cost was also part of our consideration.
We made several comparisons and decided to pay a little more to cover the overseas expenses so we could enjoy a change in venue and scenery, not to mention being able to have a holiday while taking our wedding photos!
Before we flew over, we highlighted to the bridal photography team that we were looking for a photographer who was flexible and open to exploring different ideas.
Luckily for us, the photographer assigned to us was just as passionate about bringing something different to our wedding shoot.
He showed us several shoots he previously done, and recommended a mix of both conventional and more adventurous venues – most of which had architectural and interior design elements."
"The café we shot at had a rather neutral colour scheme alongside an industrial-chic vibe, while our shoot at an old mansion showcased vernacular, structural forms with both Western and Chinese architectural influences.
We were also brought to shoot at an abandoned, dilapidated chemical factory – this was perhaps the highlight of our shoot.
Our photographer was surprised by how accepting we were of this location but we love how different it is in all its rusted, industrial glory.
After selecting the locations, we had a clearer idea of the styles and colours of our outfits, and made the selections with help from our gown stylist."
"The unexpected weather conditions proved to be the most challenging part of our shoot! We were shivering in the 9 degrees weather alongside strong winds during our shoot near the beach with windmills.
Thankfully, we had a very attentive team attending to us.
They prepared warm drinks, heat packs and additional jackets for us which was so heart-warming. Our photographer and his lighting crew also ensured that our postures and smiles were always there even while we felt exhausted from the cold."
"During our shoot at the chemical factory, we were even chased by stray dogs!
We also had to endure the rain and wind during our evening shoot, but they made for an unforgettable night portrait shot.
Having to complete our shoot in a day was also difficult; from the early makeup session to the change of attires and moving around in the outdoor locations with my long gowns.
However, we enjoyed sharing the experience with each other. It was romantic and exciting as we shared kisses and gazes, alongside the jokes and teases from the photography team made the entire shoot a memorable experience."
"Before deciding on the studio, be sure to view the portfolio of the photographers and see if their style fits in with your theme and concept.
In the case of being unable to select the photographer of your choice, you should prepare specific requirements and expectations.
Be very clear on what you want and inform your photographer the style you are looking at.
Just remember that once decided, you should give them your trust in full – after all, they are still the professionals!"
"Make sure you discuss it with your partner extensively if you have a theme in mind! Try to plan and write down the items you’ll need and the props you want to use during the shoots.
If you have allergic skin conditions, make sure you sound it out to your make-up artist or opt for airbrush make up which is gentler on the skin.
Most would imagine having high heels on during your shoot, but if you know the terrain of your shoot is likely to be challenging, all you need is a comfortable pair of footwear.
Ultimately your gown would be covering your shoes.
I actually wore knee-high boots that allowed me to walk comfortably throughout the long day of shooting, and they kept my feet warm from the cold weather."
