How this designer couple created their chic all-black BTO
A design couple’s $103,000 all-black renovation for their 5-room BTO in Bukit Batok
In a landscape where the allure of all-black interior design is gaining traction, few homeowners venture as boldly as interior designer couple Sherlynn Low and Brandon Chen in committing to this striking color scheme.
Their daring choice to envelop their entire home in the depth and sophistication of black hues sets them apart from the more cautious approaches often observed in home décor.
All Black Ceiling
The defining feature that sets this all-black home apart is the commanding oversized alcove seamlessly integrated into the living room’s architecture. Crafted by homeowner Sherlynn’s (also founder of interior design firm, Millimeters Studio), this alcove was clad entirely in rich, dark finishes that infuse the space with an aura of dark sophistication.
The synergy between the all black ceiling and the strategically positioned cove lighting frames the living room, orchestrating a spectacle that captivates the senses.
Its grandeur and the immaculate execution of dark elements lend an air of drama and refinement to the home.
All Black Kitchen
For interior designer and homeowner Sherlynn, a seasoned designer with over a decade of experience, the choice to adhere to a monochromatic palette stemmed from a clear-cut intention to delineate work from leisure within her home.
This deliberate decision was more than a matter of aesthetics; it was a strategic move to foster a distinct environment conducive to her professional focus. Opting for a singular color scheme was an intentional step to create a cozy ambiance that would, in turn, aid her in maintaining a separation between her work life and personal space.
By setting this straightforward objective at the forefront of her all black interior design idea, the subsequent choices seamlessly aligned, effortlessly coalescing to fulfill her overarching goal of nurturing a conducive yet comforting atmosphere that supports her productivity while maintaining a sense of refuge within her living space.
Kitchen Pegboard
Her astute manipulation of diverse textures like the birch wood pegboard and tiled panels strategically dispersed throughout the home adds depth and visual interest, infusing each space with vitality and charm.
“I like things simple, but with a bold or unexpected detail or twist. In a similar vein, no one area in the house is entirely black. I complement black with shades of grey, add colour to every corner with plants and accessories, and play with different textures, such as the birch wood pegboard and tiled panel at the entrance. These give the home more life, and break the monotony of a monochrome interior,” says Sherlynn.
$103,000 Renovation Budget
With a renovation budget totaling $103,000, homeowners Sherlynn and Brandon allocated a significant portion towards intricate customizations and top-tier materials, aiming to elevate their home’s aesthetic and durability.
The meticulous investment primarily centered on integrating high-quality components, notably the utilization of anti-rust and anti-corrosion galvanized steel. This resilient material found its place in the front gate, the robust legs of the kitchen island, and adorning the intricate square grid features meticulously spread throughout the residence.
Their deliberate choice to prioritize these premium elements not only underscored their commitment to longevity but also showcased a dedication to crafting a space that compliments the all black interior design.
Through this meticulous attention to detail and the judicious use of superior materials, the couple ensured that every corner of their home exuded a sense of enduring quality and sophisticated design.
Fenix Laminate
Sherlynn’s deliberate selection of Fenix laminate, known for its anti-scratch and anti-bacterial properties, for the all black ceiling and wall within the living room “box” amplifies both its resilience and cleanliness.
Complementing this, the inclusion of waterproof vinyl flooring ensures longevity and easy maintenance, adding to the practicality of the space. The commitment to a polished appearance is further accentuated by Sherlynn’s use of false ceilings to conceal all light fittings and casings, imparting a seamless and uncluttered look to the living space.
Triangle Sink
Departing from the typical long rectangular bathroom sinks, homeowner Sherlynn deliberately chose a triangle-shaped sink. Her deviation arose from her need for increased countertop space while being mindful of preserving the floor area.
By opting for this distinct triangular bathroom sink shape, she achieved a delicate balance, maximizing the bathroom countertop surface for daily utility without encroaching on the available floor space.
Bed Headboard with Table
Drawing from her extensive experience in the hospitality industry, homeowner Sherlynn found inspiration in the layout adopted by contemporary hotels, particularly the trend of combining the headboard with a multifunctional bedroom dresser.
This innovative interior design approach, observed in upscale accommodations, fascinated homeowner Sherlynn and became a pivotal influence in shaping her bedroom’s aesthetic.
The fusion of these elements reflected Sherlynn’s astute understanding of how hospitality design principles could be skillfully translated into a residential setting, enhancing the ambiance of her bedroom while introducing a level of convenience and sophistication reminiscent of a high-end hotel experience.
