Style lessons from A-list Singaporean celebrity Zoe Tay

1/11

Dubbed as the Queen of Caldecott Hill, Zoe Tay is no doubt a definitive superstar in Singapore’s entertainment industry. The ageless Ah Jie kick-started her on-screen journey in 1988, after she was crowned the winner for the inaugural Star Search, and catapulted into stardom three years later with her breakthrough performance as a materialistic young woman, Bobo, in Pretty Faces (1991).

Since then, her popularity amongst Singaporeans has remained consistent — she was awarded with the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste award at the Star Awards for 10 consecutive years since its inception in 1994, won the Best Actress award for her role in The Golden Pillow (1996) and was the first-ever actress to be bestowed with the prestigious All-Time Favourite Artiste award in 2004.

To celebrate her 51st birthday (which falls on Jan 10), we culled 10 of her best stylish moments which you can emulate.

Known for her elegance and grace, it is safe to say she’s at the top of her style game.

Mix masculine and feminine elements together

2/11

Create an effortless androgynous look by mixing tough, masculine pieces with softer elements. Here, Zoe breaks up the feminine silhouette of a flowy tulle skirt by pairing it with a pair of sneakers, a cap and a hooded jacket. The result? An intriguing mix of boyish chic. Imitate this look by wearing a floral printed flowy number with a denim jacket and a pair of mid-heeled leather boots.

Put on a statement timepiece

3/11

A stylish statement timepiece can add pizzazz to your outfit, whether you’re heading to a glamorous shindig or just a casual gathering. Learn from Zoe, who rocked a show-stopping amethyst timepiece with a sleeveless tuxedo jacket and a simple pair of drop earrings for a sophisticated vibe. Go for one that’s peppered with diamonds for that extra touch of elegance.

Monochrome can be fun too

4/11

Add a tinge of flamboyance to your blacks and whites by wearing pieces that come with interesting designs and textures. Zoe’s chevron shift dress, which she wore with black stockings, is playful yet stylish. Finish the look with a pair of silver heeled booties like her to exude an edgy vibe.

Office appropriate attire doesn’t have to be boring

5/11

A white shirt worn with a pair of tailored trousers for the office can appear lacklustre. Our Ah Jie shows how you can spice up your work-appropriate attire with a dose of unexpected gravitas, by simply playing with textures and materials.

Go for a shirt that sports a ruffled panel running along the buttons and a pair of high-waist cropped flares that’s fashioned in satin instead of cotton. Black smokey eyes not included.

Inject elements of Western Americana into your ensemble

6/11

Saddle up and exude a Wild Wild West vibe by spicing your ensemble up with an Americana twist. Zoe did this by donning a cow print biker jacket over a V-neck blouse with a pair of camel flares.

She finished off her look with a silver crossbody purse to add a touch of glam, but you can try this look with a chocolate brown belt bag if you wish to emphasis the cowgirl look.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match prints

7/11

There’s no better way to showcase a playful yet fashionable flair than to experiment with prints and textures. Just look at Zoe, who donned a quirky ensemble comprising of a checkered blazer with a neutral turtleneck bodycon dress and a pair of printed leggings during the launch of Burberry Conservatory pop-up store at Marina Bay Sands. Take a leaf from Zoe’s book and mix things up! After all, fashion is all about having fun.

Go bold with dazzling sequins

8/11

The Queen of Singapore’s showbiz shows us she is not afraid to shine with this alabaster strappy maxi dress that sports large, disc-like sequins. Match your accessories to your apparel

9/11

If you prefer to play things safe when it comes to your outfit — that means you like muted shades and conservative cuts — there’s no reason why you can’t continue with that. But to prevent looking pedestrian, learn how to play with the different shades of a particular colour, like Zoe.

Here, she matched a simple grey long-sleeve pleated number with a floral embroidered purse that’s in a lighter hue to give some contrast to her overall look.

Brighten up your outfit with colours

10/11

An all-black outfit can be boring, so learn from Zoe by adding a dash of colour to your professional work outfit. Her ensemble, which comprises a pair of black wide-legged pants and a cerulean blue cowl neck short-sleeve top, is all about sophistication and sass.

Like her, we suggest toughening up this look with a pair of killer black leather boots and a statement bedazzled cuff to avoid looking like a regular office lady.

Rock a smoking hot red number

11/11

We know that the colour red is often associated with prosperity and good luck in Chinese culture, so it can sometimes be seen as a traditional hue reserved for the old-fashioned.

Zoe proves that sentiment wrong with this sleek and stylish contemporary cheongsam that accentuates her slim figure. Spice up this already fiery piece by donning a pair of au courant heels — Zoe is on point with her yellow satin pumps, which further flatter her gams.
