First day with family

2/7

It’s nice to be dressed with some propriety on the first day with your family, which is when you’ll need all the luck you can get! Wearing separates will look super modern, but you can tie it back into tradition by wearing all bold red pieces (it’s a big plus if they’re all the same shade of red). Luscious and luxe is what you’re going for here, with a gold statement accessory like a choker and glittery heels. Start the New Year feeling prosperous and that will hopefully set the theme for the rest of your year.

Shop the look: Tibi top, $427, from Net-a-Porter, Vanessa Seward pleated skirt, $227, Charles & Keith metallic stilettos, $79.90, Red's Revenge gold choker, $17.90, from Zalora, CZ and translucent earrings, $32.00, from SheShops Accessories,

Second day out and about

3/7

The second day doesn’t really require the same level of dressing as the first, but dressing to impress the relatives (especially those pesky cousins that your mum always compares you to) is still a priority. Your second day outfit should be relatively comfortable yet stylish, which a jumpsuit pulls off perfectly. Look out for metallic embroidered jumpsuits like the one here, which balances both luxe and casual vibes. Matching a dark coloured jumpsuit with flowy outerwear in light tones like coral or clay red helps exaggerate the festive spirit. Top it off with cute earrings and you’ve got a flattering yet appropriate ensemble.

Shop the look: Mango metallic jumpsuit, $139, Mango flowy gilet, $99.90, Pedro pointed pumps, $53.40, Asos silver hoop earrings, $21.12.

Fancy dinner celebrations

4/7

Booking posh restaurants for a special New Year’s dinner is becoming increasingly popular, and it’s a nice way to enjoy the time  with your nearest and dearest. For an extra dressed up look, bring out some shiny texture like satin or silk. Opt for a long dress like this one, and pair it with a deep burgundy colour for luxe vibes. The key to this elegant look is to tone down the colours. A full on metallic piece may be a bit too striking for a posh restaurant, whereas satin is less loud but still makes a lasting impression. Bright red shoes and accessories would also have been too jarring on the eyes, so your best bet is burgundy or berry red.

Shop the look: Zara high neck satin dress, $89.90, Charles & Keith chrome heel booties, $85.90, Georgine mini G-bag, $595, ZH Tassel Drop Earrings, $6.

Visiting friends

5/7

Once the first day is over, there’s not much of a need to be too dressy for the following houses. While it’s true that you still need to keep it somewhat festive, you have a bit more leeway here, especially when visiting a friend’s open house. Keep to the traditional colours as it’s still the festive season, but try for something a little more lightweight. Short jumpsuits are wonderfully comfortable and airy, but be sure to find one in an appropriate red print. Don’t go overboard with accessories; in fact, just a simple gold belt to cinch things up is more than enough to bling you up. Set the casual tone with some pristine sneakers and you’re good to go.

Shop the look: Zara printed jumpsuit, $59.90, Rosantica gold best, $1,516, from Net-a-Porter, Adidas Gazelle white sneakers, $149.

Meeting the in-laws (or potential in-laws)

6/7

If you’re still somewhat of a newcomer to your significant other’s family, visiting during Chinese New Year can be a mission with life or death consequences. If this is the first year that you’ve been invited over (or even second or third year, depending on the nature of the family), you may be stressing over what to wear, especially if your partner’s family is conservative. Play it safe by selecting relatively modest garb, which means long skirts or pants and no backless or low cut tops. Also, keep your colours relatively soft; wearing colours that are too bold will attract too much attention to yourself, which is a nightmare if you’re not ready for it. However, it doesn’t do to be too formal either. Balance out your modest attire with a pair of luxe slides for both comfort and balance.

Shop the look: Zara jacquard peplum top, $69.90, Uniqlo Ultra Strech Jeans $59.90, No. 21 knotted satin sandals, $307, from Net-a-Porter.

Fun evening out

7/7

The long CNY weekend is meant to be enjoyed to its fullest extent, and if you’re planning to go out with friends for fun New Year drink. You need to be comfortable yet festive, but also stylish yet casual. Metallic jeans fulfill these requirements adequately, and when matched with a plain white top and cute pumps, they make for stylish evening apparel. Don light outerwear to complete this Chinese New Year look, like a wine red kaftan; this way you can simply take it off if you don’t want to look too festive.

Shop the look: Mango velvet kaftan, $99.90, Mango metallic trousers $65, Mango poplin blouse, $55.90, Gianvito Rossi leather pumps, $825, from Net-a-Porter, hoop earrings,$16.89, from Asos.
