Singapore’s local music scene is as diverse as its population. In this series, four homegrown musicians open up about their personal journeys, revealing their inspirations, challenges, and the unique cultural fusion that shapes their music.

Haven, whose real name is Teo Cher Win, entered the music industry in 2019, when she was just 16 years old. Her stage name, Haven, reflects her desire to create a safe sanctuary through her music – a refuge where listeners can find solace and comfort.

What inspired you to start your music career at such a young age?

I started my music career at the age of 16. That age can be quite a confusing time for anyone. I was overwhelmed with new emotions, and I didn’t know how to express it. I’ve always loved listening to music, and admired how easy it was for the artiste to put their feelings into writing. I knew from that point on that I wanted to be an artiste.

I remember the day it happened – I was battling depression, and I went to my usual spot outside my house. I put on my headphones to drown everything out. I looked up at the sky – it was beautiful that day. I was listening to James Arthur’s Impossible, an inspiring song that’s perfect for an epiphany. I went home and told my mum that I would take my music dreams more seriously, and the rest is history.

What was the first song you ever wrote, and what was it about?

I was eight or nine when I wrote my first song called Happy. I don’t remember how it goes, but all I remember was writing about being happy.

What was it like seeing “No Hard Feelings” gain so much traction on Spotify?

I cried the day it hit a million streams on Spotify. I am still speechless to this day, I’m just beyond grateful for all the support and love that song has gotten. It has motivated and encouraged me to make more songs. Most importantly to all my angels, thank you for being by my side throughout my journey!

Can you share what fans can expect from your debut album?

An emotional rollercoaster. The upcoming album is my baby! I’ve poured my heart and soul into each and every song that is written and I’m so excited to share it. My listeners can expect Haven from this album, the true authentic me.

How do you feel about the current state of the Singapore music scene, especially for new artists like yourself?

I think it’s been improving every single year, I have always believed that the generation before me paved the way for new artists like myself. They crawled so we could run. There’s a lot of amazing talented artists right here in Singapore. I believe that with more continuous support we could really change the whole music scene.

What role do you see music festivals playing in the growth of local music?

They are huge stepping stones to being recognised as an artist internationally and regionally. With bigger platforms, it’s an opportunity to expose your music to more people. It’s also just really fun to be on stage and enjoy the moment with everyone!

If you had to describe your music style as a type of food, what would it be and why?

Fries, because everyone loves it! It’s a guilty pleasure but you will always go back to it because it’s also a comfort food. Plus, you can dip it in any sauce for variety.

Who are some of your musical influences, both locally and internationally?

Locally, BRB. Internationally, American singer- songwriters Kehlani and Tinashe.

After Hours by Kehlani

If your life had a soundtrack, what song would be playing during your most epic moments?
