Cabin crew share the worst passenger experiences they have ever faced

From entitled baggage wars to getting tugged like sales items, cabin crew reveal shocking passenger behaviour at 35,000 feet

If you’ve ever flown and thought your biggest in-flight annoyance was a crying baby or lukewarm meal, spare a thought for the cabin crew. Behind those perfect updos and warm smiles are humans dodging tantrums, insults, and all manner of bizarre behaviour from passengers who decided to leave their manners at the boarding gate.

Considering how ignorant some passengers can be, we spoke to cabin crew members who’ve experienced the full spectrum of in-flight horror stories. The result? A list of sky-shaking encounters that will leave you appalled.

1. “He tapped my hips to get my attention.” – Tasha, 27

While making her way through a full cabin, Tasha felt something that no one should feel at work: someone tapping her hips to get her attention. “I turned around thinking maybe it was an accident,” she said, “but nope, he did it again.”

Worse, she’s also had passengers tug on her uniform (yes, tug) like she was a fish being haggled at a wet market. “It’s like some passengers forget we’re people and not props,” she added.

2. “No beef? Okay, I’ll starve.” – Gracie, 31

Meal service on a plane is already a stressful time, but Jamie recalled one particular incident that left her speechless. “We ran out of beef by the time we reached the last few rows, and this man, maybe in his 40s, refused the chicken, shouted at me, and crossed his arms like a toddler,” he uttered.

To add salt to the wound, the man’s wife apologised on his behalf while he glared into his screen.

3. “Are you stupid?” – Amanda, 22

Amanda, fresh into the job, was on a long-haul flight when a meal mix-up led to verbal abuse. “We had 80 special meal orders. My junior accidentally gave a passenger a halal meal instead of vegetarian. I stepped in to help, but before I could say anything, he just exploded.”

He called her “stupid”, “ugly” and told her to go away, causing a service delay for the rest of the cabin. “I was just 22 then,” Amanda said. “He didn’t even want to hear an apology… he just wanted someone to yell at.”

4. “Barefoot, stressed, and screaming.” – Leila, 28

After a seven-hour flight delay caused by aircraft issues, Leila knew tensions were high. What she didn’t expect was a woman stomping up to her barefoot, shoes in hand, and yelling, “Do you know how tired I am? I just want to eat my meal and go to sleep!”

“It’s like people think we cause the delay personally,” Leila voiced. “We were just as exhausted, if not more.”

5. “No overhead space? It’s war.” – Julie, 34

Julie recalls a flight where a family of four boarded last with eight carry-ons. Keyword: last. “There was no space directly above their seats, which is normal on full flights. But instead of understanding, both parents yelled at me in front of everyone.”

Despite Julie’s efforts to rearrange other passengers’ bags and find space, she got zero thanks, just complaints. “And by the way, if your bag’s too heavy for you, it’s likely too heavy for us too,” she added.

6. “You’re invisible until you make a mistake.” – Rina, 24

Rina shared how some passengers refuse to make eye contact or acknowledge the crew after minor slip-ups, even after sincere apologies. “It’s like the second something goes wrong, we’re not human anymore… we’re targets,” she expressed.

The sky may seem serene, but for cabin crew, turbulence comes in more forms than one.

These stories may seem funny or outrageous, but they highlight a deeper issue in the service industry. While cabin crew are trained to smile, accommodate, and assist, they’re also human. They face long hours, tight spaces, as well as emotional and physical labour, all while being expected to handle mistreatment with grace.

Next time you’re flying, remember the faces serving you aren’t part of the furniture. A little kindness and patience can go a long way in the sky.
