"They help me help other dogs."

After getting Butter five years ago, Marie went on to foster another dog rescued from a puppy mill here. But the dog had been raised in harsh conditions, and was very timid and fearful. It had never been walked on a leash.

Thanks to Butter, Marie managed to befriend and rehabilitate the dog. She eventually found it a new home and bought another dog, Ash. The co-founder of dog welfare organisation Dogs Owners Guidance Support now fosters strays and, with the help of her shelties, helps them readjust so they can be adopted.

Marie, who is a certified dog behaviourist and trainer, says: “If a dog is afraid of being leashed, I’ll leash Ash and let her walk in front to show that it’s okay. Or if it’s aggressive towards other dogs, I’ll get Butter to approach it and calm it down.” As a reward, Marie treats Butter and Ash to food fit for a (canine) queen, including finely ground bones as well as fruits and veggies such as apricots, cranberries and zucchini – which costs her about $50 a week. They also get $150 haircuts every two to three months.
