With the Singaporean penchant for all things sweet (remember the macaron mania?), it’s no surprise that expectations were high for Lady M Confections first outlet here. After all, this New York cake boutique was the brand that started the popular mille crepe cake craze back in 2005.
Now open at Marina Square, the first Lady M Singapore outlet is a 56-seater space that has no kitchen space per se. Instead, it serves cakes that are delivered daily from its central kitchen, as the cakes are too “complicated” to prepare within the limited countertop space, says the brand rep. The decor is decidedly minimalist, as with the other Lady M stores; all the more to draw your attention to just cakes.
Their best-selling Mille Crepe cake is still the top draw at the Singapore outlet, so much so that there is a “two cake limit” per diner. On the September 8 opening day, over 30 Mille Crepe cakes were sold by 5pm.
We had a taste of six of the Lady M treats, including the celebrated cake this week. Read our review here for a peek at the must tries:
Lady M Mille Crepe cake, $7.50 per slice, $40 for whole 6-inch cake, $75 for 9-inch.

Light and airy, the Lady M Mille Crepe cake (from $7.50 a slice) lives up to the fame. Covered with a beautiful caramelised finish on top, Lady M’s signature cake features cream sandwiched between 20 layers of crepe; the crepe layers are so thin that it practically melts in your mouth. The Japanese-style pastry cream was as fluffy and frothy as whipped cream, with a pleasant tinge of sweetness.
Eat this as soon as you can: the cake was so delicate that it started sliding sideways after 10 minutes on our plate.
As much as the original mille crepe cake was such a bliss to savour, we like the Green Tea Mille Crepe cake ($8 a slice) even more.
Green Tea Mille Crepe cake, $8 per slice, $45 for 6-inch cake, $80 for 9-inch cake
Dusted with matcha (fine, powdery green tea) on every layer of thin crepe, the cake’s earthy and mildly bitter aftertaste offsets the sweetness of the cream. So if you find the famed mille crepe cake a tad too milky, the green tea variant is your refreshing alternative.
Checkers Board cake, $8 per slice, $80 for the whole cake
Chocolate addicts will take to the pretty-on-the-plate Checkers Board cake ($8 a slice). Cubes of chocolate and vanilla sponge are alternated to create the checkered pattern, with fluffy cream filling the gaps between each square. While greedy us wished for more chocolate ganache, the restrained chocolate portioning meant that we could actually finish the cake and still have room for more sweets.
Strawberry Shortcake, $7.50 per slice, $75 for the whole cake
Lady M’s Strawberry shortcake ($7.50) was another favourite at our table. The Japanese-style vanilla sponge is made with imported Japanese flour, with fresh slices of strawberries sandwiched between layers of moist sponge and cream.
Tarte aux Fruits, $10 per slice, $95 for the whole tart and Eclairs ($5.50 each)
The Tarte aux Fruits ($10 a slice) may look the most visually appealing but the pastry itself hardly left an impression. Its crumbly centre also felt a bit too soggy and moist when we’d tried it that day.
While the chocolate eclair ($5.50 each) boasted that ooze-worthy custard cream centre, the chocolate glaze cracked off in chunks; perhaps the choux pastry was chilled for too long.
You would think that this much cream would make the cakes too sweet or too rich on the palate, but it wasn’t the case, thus the continued popularity and fame of this cake boutique. All in, the mille crepe cakes are still the must-haves; try it for yourself to get a taste of these light-as-air treats.
Keep an eye out for the second Lady M outlet in Singapore, opening at One Fullerton, right beside the Merlion statue by the Singapore River.
