If you’ve generally not been feeling up to it lately, you might be suffering from depression. However, note that just feeling down for a while and actually being depressed are two different things. See a medical professional if you’re experiencing any of these seven symptoms.

YOU’RE CONSTANTLY TIRED
Lacking in energy and always feeling lethargic is one of the most common signs of depression – and the most crippling part of the condition. However, feeling very tired are also symptoms of several other conditions (such as thyroid problems or being low in iron) so don’t dismiss these issues if this is your only possible depression indicator.

YOU’VE PUT ON A LOT OF WEIGHT
If you’ve suddenly put on or lost a significant amount of weight without even trying – more than 5% of body weight in a month – it could be because you’re suffering from depression. Another good indicator is if you experience a sudden increase in or loss of appetite.

YOU’RE WAY TOO EMOTIONAL
Overreacting to almost everything with a variety of emotions isn’t normal. If you’re laughing, crying or getting very angry at things that shouldn’t warrant such strong reactions, it could be because you’re depressed.

YOU FEEL EMPTY
You feel numb most of the time, not having any motivation to get out of bed in the morning, or to leave the house or to even talk to anyone. If you’re walking around like a zombie, going through the motions because you have to, you might need to get help.

YOU’RE NOT INTERESTED & CAN’T CONCENTRATE
Activities you used to enjoy no longer give you any pleasure. You stop doing the things you love, such as sports or hobbies, or even just hanging out with friends. And when you do anything – at work or in your personal life – you find it hard to concentrate or think clearly.

YOU’RE DRINKING TOO MUCH
Alcohol is a common way to self-medicate when you’re feeling low. So if you’re reaching for that bottle of wine at home more often than before or constantly inviting friends on nights out – and you still don’t feel any better afterwards – you might be depressed.

YOU CAN’T SLEEP OR YOU SLEEP TOO MUCH
You find it hard to fall asleep and when you do, you wake up several times throughout the night. Or, you constantly feel sleepy and find it hard to get out of bed. While sleep disorders also have similar symptoms, look out for other signs of depression too, if you’re feeling this way.
