As the anticipation for the momentous historic summit that will be held in Singapore on June 12 between United States President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un build up, food and beverage outlets are pulling out all the stops to roll out themed food with both American and Korean influences.

One such eating establishment to get your Korean American fusion fix is Royal Plaza on Scotts hotel. To mark the summit, Royal Plaza on Scotts hotel will be offering a limited edition menu combining American and Korean influences. The hotel will be serving up a grilled Trump-Kim Burger ($12) that consists of minced chicken and kimchi patty, served alongside kimbap and fries. There will also be a specially concocted Summit Iced Tea ($6) that is made by infusing honey yuzu into traditional iced tea, which originated from America.

When we heard about this burger we were skeptical because you wouldn’t usually pair kimchi and burger buns. We took matters into our own hands and decided to try it for ourselves.

Not going to lie – we were expecting the burger to be bigger in size. It is definitely more of a slider. Even though the portion of the burger was a little disappointing, we were pleasantly surprised by how plump, juicy and moist the chicken patty was. It also packs in just the right amount of heat.

While though the chicken patty is seasoned with kimchi, you can actually taste hints of lemongrass like you would with Thai dishes. The buns were also pillowy soft and the seaweed seasoning that was sprinkled on the buns added a nice touch.

It’s quite a pity that cucumbers were the only other ingredient in this burger. Onions, tomatoes and other greens would definitely have added to the texture and dimension of this dish.

The Trump-Kim burger is a little pricey for what it is but I would still recommend it if you like your spices and oriental flavours and are looking for something a little different to your usual grilled or fried meat patty.

If you want to sample the dish before shelling out the dough, Royal Plaza on Scotts will be giving our mini Trump-Kim Burgers outside the hotel on the day of the summit (June 12)  at 12pm and 6pm. To get a free burger, you have to like the hotel’s Facebook page or Instagram.

The Trump-Kim Burger and Summit Iced Tea is available from today till June 15, 2018, 6pm to 10pm, at Scotts Lounge (Level 2, Royal Plaza on Scotts).
