With newcomers to the scene like Three Buns in the heart of the residential enclave, The English House by Marco Pierre White on Mohamed Sultan Road, and JYPSY on Martin Road, there are plenty of reasons to check out Robertson Quay. Here are more: 

 

1. Summerlong

Overlooking the river, Summerlong scores top points on a breezy, balmy day. We already know we like it for its hummus and beachside vibes, but it just rolled out a spanking new Mediterranean brunch menu.

Tuck into the Real Turkish Breakfast ($35), which consists of warm bread, spiced merguez sausage with Turkish beans and a refreshing cucumber and tomato side salad. This comes with Turkish eggs in a warm yoghurt and chilli spiced browned butter and a range of condiments such as spinach and feta borek, sour cherry jam, harissa, honey ricotta, cured beef, labneh, smoked olives, mandarin orange and feta cheese. You can also opt for The Counter ($23) - simply grab a plate and choose from the dishes on display. From charcoal grilled eggplant to roasted pumpkin with a tahini lemon dressing and caramelised onions, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Summerlong’s a cosy space to nurse hangovers. Plus the food is nutritious and healthful enough that you won’t feel guilty for skipping your Sunday yoga class in favour of brunch. Complete the meal with vitamin-packed juices, smoothies and kombuchas.

The charming small-batch artisanal gelateria is filled with interesting gelato and sorbets. There’s fan favourite pistachio (thick, creamy and worth the calories) as well as the more unusual strawberry basil and sake, lime and kombu flavours. The latter two are vegan-friendly too. But the most creative flavour created to date would have to be chicken rice.

The ice-cream makers are inspired by the food that they try. Take for instance a peculiar flavour inspired by Japanese soy sauce. A little salty, very yummy. We like how they take the familiar and re-introduce them in unexpected ways. One for Harry Potter fans is butterbeer, which contains a bit more of a boozy kick than than what you’d expect Harry, Ron and Hermione to have had while schooling. At the end of the month - just in time for Halloween, keep a lookout for a limited edition pumpkin flavour.

3. The Quayside Pup Club

Who says fur kids can’t enjoy ice-cream too? Starting this Sunday, Singapore’s artisan pet supplier Talya’s Sorvete will be selling “pupsicles” for your pups at its pop up.  The treats, free of preservative, sugar and dairy, come in blueberry, honey mango and strawberry ($5). Perfect for hot afternoons or a post-walk reward. So who’s a good boy?

Robertson Quay is shaping up quite nicely into the place to chill out at on lazy days. Now if only the closest MRT wasn’t more than 10 minutes away.

4. Porta x Malagos Chocolate

Confession: This one isn’t actually taking place during the weekend but on October 18 and 19. Still, it’s so intriguing that we couldn’t resist sneaking it onto this list. What’s happening is European Bistro Porta is collaborating with Malagos Chocolate from the Phillipines to introduce a four-course meal, each with a different type of dark chocolate. Is there such thing as too much chocolate? We think not.

Whet your appetite with the Home-cured Milk Fish with Malagos 85 per cent Dark Chocolate and Fish Sauce. The sugarcane and vinegar lends the dish a bright sweetness. But the combination that went surprisingly well was the home-made Foie Gras Terrine served with Malagos dark chocolate -infused grape chutney and a dash of Malagos roasted cacao nibs. It was buttery and rich but not overwhelmingly so. Caveat: although the kitchen steers clear of white and milk chocolate, you’ll probably need a bit of sweet tooth to enjoy all the dishes.

Treat yourself with wine pairing for an additional $36. Otherwise it’s $68.

5. Nickeldime River Valley

A stone’s throw away from Robertson Quay is gastropub Nickeldime River Valley. It’s a chilled haven that recently introduced a boozy weekend brunch. For $50, you’ll get a bottomless selection of bites - the hangout’s signature scotch eggs, mac & cheese and spinach and kale croquettes, and a choice of beverage.

Choose from international craft beers, red and white wine. Plus quench your thirst with homemade Mexican beer cocktail Michelada. The Michaelda is basically a blend of beer, lime juice, and an assortment of spices, sauces and peppers for you to mix up however you like. All that on top of one brunch main.

Our pick for a hearty main is the Spiked Orange French Toast. It’s a thick slice of soft buttery brioche topped with a luscious scoop of chocolate ganache. The scattering of drunken oranges add a burst of zest, while the slightly bitter crushed walnuts help balance the sweetness. Available a la carte is the Smoked Salmon Croque Monsieur ($21). The gruyere and cheddar cheese sandwiched between rustic house-made sourdough with a crispy crust was a delectable savoury treat.
