Having a diet with a lot of fruit in it is a no-brainer, as we all know they are stuffed with important vitamins. But not all fruit is created equal, so here we take a look at the best varieties to opt for if you want to maximise the health benefits.

1. Blueberries

This is probably not a big surprise, as the berries have been touted as a super food for some time – but with good reason. That’s because they are packed with antioxidants, which help guard the body against diseases. They’ve been linked to keeping the heart healthy and guarding against cancer too, plus some small studies have suggested they can keep the memory sharp. They are also low in calories and high in vitamin C.

2. Cantaloupe

Melons are a great low-calorie snack, and one which many people don’t think of tucking into. Cantaloupes are particularly healthy because they are full of fibre, vitamin C, potassium and beta-carotene, an antioxidant which helps battle free radicals. It can also be turned into vitamin A by the body, which is essential for healthy skin.

3. Peaches

Another fleshy fruit, which Dietician Julie Upton, MS, RD, of Appetite For Health, describes as a “nutritional powerhouse” to Popsugar. That’s because an average-sized one has 60 calories but included in those are 20 different nutrients, among them zinc, potassium and many vitamins.

4. Strawberries

A little known fact: one portion of these red fruits packs in more vitamin C than an orange. It’s essential for keeping cells protected and healthy and has a part to play in collagen production, which is important for supporting skin, bones and blood vessels. It also helps wounds heal faster and protects from free radicals, which can build up and contribute to things like cancer and heart disease.

Less important but still of interest, eating them can also help keep your teeth white thanks to the acid content. — Cover Media
